Bad luck or did I ignore the clues?

Postby gnarus » Tue May 10, 2005 6:36 am

I was playing .05/.10 blind no limit poker at UB with a $10.00 max buy in. Having a good session, up 4.00 or so after 40 hands. I was by far the big stack, with the table average about 5.00 or so.

Evil was in early position, 7 off the button. He was the first to bet, and he limped in with a 10 cent call. Irrelevant also called, and our Champion was in the Big Blind with a 9, 5 off. Took a free check.

Based on 60 hands of data at the time, I did not think much of Evil. He was playing with a small stack, only $3.75. He was voluntarily putting money in the pot 41% of all hands, and extremly aggressive post flop. Flop, turn and river were pretty close to betting 30% of the time, calling 10%, folding 35, and check 25%. He pre-flopped raised 15% of the time.

Anyway, the flop was K, 9, 5, rainbow. Our champion was the first to bet, and he makes a pot bet of .35 cents. Evil re-raises .35 for a .70 bet total. Irrelevant folds.
Champion makes another .35 reraise to take it to 1.05, and evil calls. The turn is a 4 of h. Champion makes a bet of 1.25, and evil raises all in to $2.60, all in. I call, and find out he has King 9.

Did I go wrong here or just a bad break? The 1st time I remember thinking I was probably beat was on the turn when he re-raised me all in. Should I have bet more/less? Let me know what you think, I appreciate it!

gnarus,
bottom two pair is always difficult to play.

Your pot-reraise on the flop was much too small. Else you reraise him pot or you call. I would have called his bet, since his reraise was not very high and you can wait until the turn if the board pairs or not.

On the turn the board did not pair, which was good for you. I would have bet again like you. His reraise was again not so high, since he went all-in and I think your call was okay. He could have had KQo or a gutshot straight draw, too. You were just unlucky that he had K9. If he had much more money on the table and his reraise therfore much bigger, I would have folded.
