Lucky or Good Call...?

Postby MVPSPORTS » Mon May 16, 2005 3:10 pm

Playing at the Radisson in Costa Rica, this hand came up... a couple people said that I lucked out, but I think it was a very good play... These players were VERY bad, calling w/ Kanything or Aanything... I saw one of them raise $25 PF w/ 88, and call an allin w/ AK2 board...

Honestly, the only reason I even played this hand is because one of the two players straddled like 3 hands in a row, and it was SEVERELY pissing me off...

I'm in MP w/ [Kh] [Jc] ... I call his freakin strattle for $4... LP calls... Dickkhead straddler is in CO and checks... BB calls...

Pot is $17.... flop [Ks] [Jh] [9d] ... BB bets $10... I raise to $50 ( I know it was a little high, but these guys don't respect a moderate sized bet)... LP folds... DH pushes allin for a total of $200... BB thinks for a LONG time, then folds...

Theres no flush on the table... He could be playing QT, but why would he push SO hard w/ it... I also don't think he'd bet trips that hard (these people DEFINITELY subscribe to the whole "slowplay your monsters" line of poker... I gotta think he's got AK or AQ maybe...

I call and he flips over K9... All of a sudden, the BB gets up, grabs the cards out of the muck, and shows everyone that he had K9 also... Didn't matter, as my top 2 pair paid off...

So, that starts off a discussion (mostly in Spanish which I only understood in bits and pieces) about how lucky I was to win the hand... I argued, on the other hand, that the DH straddler played the hand poorly... What the hell could he think that I have had to make such a big bet...? Granted, these players were pretty bad, and weren't paying attention to the fact that I was the only one at the table playing tight, but I also had like $600 in front of me at a $200 max table, so he had to know I wasn't afraid of the K...

So, whaddya think...

What's the question? Top 2 is a monster hand against crazy players like these guys. You played it and won.

What "luck"? I mean, yeah, it's lucky that you got dealt the K and the J while they got Ks and 9s. Is that what they meant?

Could he have been playing a set, well yes. If he flopped a set so be it, I'll pay him off. If he had flopped a straight he played it horribly. Why reraise in position with the nuts, on a rainbow flop? One other strong reason that I wouldn't have put him on a set, if he stratled and he was in late postion, there is a very good chance he would have raised with KK or JJ , so the only really possible set is 99. I think the way the hand is played I would make this call every time and not think twice about it. And thank him for the dontation.

Thats what I was trying to figure out... Maybe I was misinterpreting my spanish, and the word "luck" really meant "great play" or something... I know they weren't talking about my PF hand selection, cause 2 of em were playing K9, and the others played equally crappy hands...

Rhound... I'm not sure if I put it in the origional post, but the main reasons I didn't have him on a set were: 1... he bet out so much as to make us both fold, which they ALMOST never do, plus, I had a K and a J, and assumed BB had one or the other... that didn't leave many cards left... I figured if he lucked his way into a 99 trip, so be it... I was better than them, and would've taken their money eventually anyway...
