Chasing the Straight Flush...

Postby MVPSPORTS » Mon May 16, 2005 1:12 pm

Playing at an incredibly loose/aggresive 1/2 NL game in Costa Rica... Both opponents have about $200... I have them covered by a little...

I'm in EP w/ [8d] [9d] ... MP raises to $15 (which is the lower end of the typical PF raise)... LP calls...I call, hoping to break somebody...

Pot is $48... Flop... [6d] [7d] [Kh] ...

I check, MP raises $25... LP calls... At this point, I have MP on Ksomething, not particularly high... Possibly K10-AK... They LOVE slowplaying trips, so I don't think he had KK... LP I have NO idea... He's been playing like GARBAGE, and could just as easily have 89, a couple diamonds (I was hoping not) or another K... I call the $25...

Pot is ~$125... Turn... [7c] ...

I check, MP ( who I'm POSITIVE had Kx) bets $25... LP calls... back to me...

Okay, a little background at this point... I don't mean to be a little offensive, but LP is a great big fat guy... I'm looking at him make this call, and I can physically see his breathing speed up about 2x... He was basically heaving... He had to be playing a 7...

So, at this point, I decide it's time to make a move.... I figure I have 15 outs (9 hearts, 3 5s, 3 10s) to win... I don't think I need the SF, as I'm pretty sure I'm up against 2pr and trips at this point... My outs can be wrong, as I'm not very good at this kinda stuff...

My thinking goes like this... I think out of the 44 cards left (46 minus 1 players K and anothers 7), 15 give me a win, which against 2 others makes me about even money (again I'm not very good at this thing, especially on the spot)... Plus, by pushing hard, there's the possibility they both fold, adding to my odds... Finally, after reading Harrington's book, I was afraid one or both would fold if I called and a diamond hit...

So, I push for about $150 more... Ksomething folds... Mr. Heavy Breather calls w/ his trips, and nothing hits, giving me the loss...

Was this a good play or not... Even though I hated the loss, I felt like my move was justifiable... That many outs, plus the fact that I may have scared them off their hands, made me make my move...

Any help would be appreciated...

The heavy breathing = he loves his hand, and he's not folding. I don't think you have any folding equity.

But your push does make one of your two opponents fold. Now you're no longer getting 3:1 on your money. So pushing just killed your odds.

You're getting the odds to call on the turn, and the heavy breather is signalling that he thinks his trips are good and he'll pay you off! So call the turn and then push the river only if you're ahead. (The trips guy may fold if your flush hits, but he'll definitely pay you off if your straight hits.)

IMHO, pushing here is a very bad play.

Thanks for the help... I think I was tilting a little at that point, and it clouded my judgement seeing all those outs... I'm gonna make another post named "muppetted myself out of the nuts" where I explain the reasons for my tilt... Feel free to read it and tell me how crappily I played that one too...

Thank GOD I found another VERY LOOSE game the last couple days and actually turned a profit on my trip...

BTW... a little advice I learned the hard way in Costa Rica... DON'T DRINK ALL DAY, HANG OUT IN A WHOREHOUSE ALL AFTERNOON, AND TRY TO PLAY POKER ALL NIGHT...

That's what a friend of mine does. When he's thinking, he says he pictures a little Brian on his shoulder giving him advice as to what to do, like a good angel. I try my best to help which has made my home games much more difficult to beat now that they play better. Stupid me.
