QQ versus KK

Postby puterguy76 » Tue May 17, 2005 3:04 pm

I think I might have been a little too aggressive with this hand, but for some reason I put the other guy on AK type hand and was trying to protect my hand. Should I assume i'm up against an overpair in situations like this or was I right to think I had the best hand and try to protect it? I really hate QQ! Someone always seems to have an overpair when I get this hand, especially on Party Poker's skins.

With QQ and another player left to act, I would have reraised preflop. With QQ, I am going to reraise preflop almost every time, if your opponant reraises its definatly time to fold. There is almost nothing you have beat, other than maybe an off chance of JJ. If he smooth calls the raise, I bet and if he pushes over the top I again consider folding. Putting more money in preflop allows you to get off your hand.

Tough to get away from an overpair, and maybe QQ in particular. With KK, you pretty much have to go to the end, with QQ/JJ you have to worry about more overpairs.

The one place I can see you clearly getting away is if you reraise preflop to $6, and he reraises you back to $15 or something. You should be able to fold QQ/JJ in this spot if you have stats and your opponent is a tight player, it would be very hard to get away from KK.

His call on the flop indicated that he has a hand, not sure how many people would call with AK unless they have a flush draw (there were 2 clubs). On the turn, the 3rd club hits, so betting $20 is I think a bad play. You don't know if he has the flush, and with the size of that bet and the size of your stack you are commited to the pot. A check would have been better in that spot.

I think maybe I feel uncomfortable playing any hand aside from KK or AA out of position like that. I need to work on my early position play a bit more. I feel like there is a whole army of people out there that smooth call until they have all your money. So i sometimes feel if I raise out of position and get called i'm not sure why I got called and would put him on an AK. Then if I bet the flop and get called i'm not sure if he has me beat of is drawing to his overcards. And if he is in fact drawing to his overcards and I check the turn I am inviting him to bluff me out with a a hand like AK and I would have to fold the best hand then. If I bet out the turn again he's just draining me dry. I dont like checking with people behind me because it makes me appear weak. I try to maintain a raise of fold style of play and it sometimes costs me my stack as you can see. :)

Good point poker. I must have overlooked the club on the turn.

Puter guy, there is nothing wrong with folding the best hand once and a while, if you dont you are calling/betting to much. There is also nothing wrong with checking once and while, yes it does appear weak but you cant live in fear of being bluffed, most of the players at the this level are playing their cards, if someone is good enough to push you off the best hand with a well timed bluff so be it, the next time you have a monster and check he is going to try to bluff you again and get destroyed.

Agreed with everyone else... I would defiently check that turn card. the flush and an off-chance of A3 straight are not cool. Try to keep the pot small in this situation.
