Hand against a good lag

Postby Kalle » Wed May 18, 2005 1:26 pm

This hand is against a BTP'er but that's not why I'm posting it. I hate these kind of hands. I really dont know what to do on flop. And I dont like the turn.
I probably should have raised preflop but I didn't because the button called all my raises. Is this wrong?

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em, $4 BB (6 handed)

MP ($147.15)
Hero ($608.55)
Button ($502.40)
SB ($443.10)
BB ($916.10)
UTG ($309.90)

Preflop: Hero is CO with [Tc], [Jc].
2 folds, Hero calls $4, 2 folds, BB raises to $16, Hero calls $12.

Flop: ($34) [Ts], [6s], [6d] (2 players)
BB bets $24, Hero calls $24.

Turn: ($82) [Kc] (2 players)
BB bets $40, Hero calls $40.

River: ($162) [3c] (2 players)
BB checks, Hero checks.

Final Pot: $162

You really put yourself in a situation by not raising the flop. You never know if you are ahead or drawing really thin. I think you got a the showdown cheaper than you normally would. JT is a defendable hand buts its also pretty marginal too but I'm not a shorthanded player. In this case, I put the BB on QQ or JJ and you probably saved yourself some money in this case but just calling this down when you have position just seems weak. Pretty much the only hands you beat on the river by your play is 99, 88, AQ or AJ most of which are marginal situations for the BB to play like this.

What are BB's raising stats for the session?

For your play to be correct, they'd need to raise from BB with a wide range of hands, and be capable of bluffing both flop and turn. (In which case, as an aside, in 6 max the correct play is almost certainly to leave the table!)

I think the flop call is fine (provided you don't always raise here with a strong TP hand).

Most players will slow down on the turn; so when he continues to lead, either the K helped him or he was ahead anyway. I'll fold the turn.

Briachek - how much to raise on the flop? min? pot? The danger is you just give money away to AA-JJ but AK is going to check-fold anyway on the turn (apart from the 10% of the time they improve).

A final thought - if you really do put them on QQ/JJ, gotta bluff raise the K on the turn :)

Another final thought - why aren't you raising with TJs from the CO?! Just think to yourself: What Would Palman Do...
