Tight spot versus a very solid player

Postby DaHitDogg » Thu May 19, 2005 2:19 am

I am interested to know how others would play this hand. Opponent was a TAG (VP$IP = 13, PFA = 2.40 over 500+ hands) who I think frequents this website.

Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em, $ BB (9 handed)

MP2 ($63)
MP3 ($178.35)
CO ($44.3)
Button ($33.3)
SB ($122.5)
BB ($100)
UTG ($100)
DaHittDogg ($310.77)
MP1 ($106.2)

Preflop: DaHittDogg is UTG+1 with [Qd], [Qc]. SB posts a blind of $0.5.
1 fold, DaHittDogg raises to $4, 6 folds, BB calls $3.

Flop: ($8.50) [5c], [Th], [7s] (2 players)
BB checks, DaHittDogg bets $8, BB raises to $20, DaHittDogg folds.

I had a reraise of $45 ready to go, but then decided against it. Any thoughts? The only hands I could beat that he would presumably c/r with would be Jacks or AT. The only reason I think I might have made a bad fold is that there was no reason to check raise me with a set because the board wasn't very threatening.

Wow he is tighter than me.When you post the PT stats I think it's good also to post post-flop aggression.

Do you know if this guy reraises with AA-KK? If I see a player that doesnt reraise with big pairs preflop I put a note him. Very important to know when you have QQ-TT. And this guy is not very aggressive preflop. I think he could have AA or KK

His flop checkraise looks very scary. He doesnt want to minimumraise because he knows that gives the strength of his hand away, and he doesnt want to make a real raise that makes you fold.

A reraise to $45 is a bad idea. Fold or call and see what he does on turn. I think you made a good fold.

And the comments you made were "Only for you"? ;)

And FWIW, my PFA is much higher than 2.4 but I am assuming that is due to only having 500 hands logged. Also, my VP$P is so low due to playing 8 tables....

Anyways, I know I didnt comment in the chat window when you folded and made that remark since I did not know it was you. But since you are a BTP member, I'll let you know that I had a set of 10's.

Personally, I would've reraised. A lot of players reraise the flop on that board to see if you actually have a hand or if you are playing AK. I do this frequently as well. If I play back at your reraise then I think its time to fold.

Anyways...you made a good, tough fold.

Best of luck...

That's very nice, to find out what your opponent had after a fold :). I also respect strong play by very good tight players, although this play was more aggressive from Perfect than I would have expected. I would have expected him to slowplay his set and put the screws on later. Nice fold.

I fold in that spot against a player that I respect. I'm sure people pull a move on me from time to time and occasionally I fold the best hand but I don't want to play for a buy in under the circumstances you described. There are better spots to put your money into play.

Aside from a serious 3 month period of tilt where I was break even basically (don't ask and I hope you never got through that) I have been progressively getting better. The primary changes I have made are laying down hands a fair portion of the time I am not certian I am ahead (hands that are going to play out for 1/2 a buy in or more) and waiting for those times when I am pretty certain I am ahead to go to war/trap.

I think the single biggest difference between the big winners and the avg players are the big winners do not play out second best hands. They play out best hands when an opponent has the second best hand. Anyone can fold garbage. Paying off with second best hands accounts for a boatload of money when done with consistency. I'd rather drop best hands 10% of the time along with the second best hands 90% of the time than playing a ratio where I'm paying off with second best hands on a regular basis.
