short $25NL hand, giving up top pair real easy

Postby laynegt » Thu May 19, 2005 4:31 pm

Playing $25nl on UB, this hand I have been thinking about a lot. This is from memory:

SB: $10
BB (me): $25
MP: $35, i think in 5th position

PF: MP calls, SB calls, I check w/ [As] [9h]

Flop (.75): [9s] [5d] [3c]
SB bets .25, I raise to $1, MP thinks forever (hello, it's a $2 pot), and calls, SB folds

I had played at least a couple orbits or 3 against MP and had no notes on him, so i'm thinking he's at least halfway decent. Also I'm thinking, 'why is he taking so long?' If he had 64 and wanted to play, he would've called much faster. So at this point, I put him on a monster.

Turn (3.00): [8s] (don't really remember the suit)
I check, he bets $3 pretty much immediately, I fold pretty much immediately.

Too weak?

I read this wrong the first time, I thought you raised preflop with A9o. My bad.
You played it well. His bet looked weak and you raised it showing you have a hand. It looks like he was slowplaying something, overpair or set, and you were right to fold to the bet on the turn when he showed strength.

He got a free look in the blind, flopped TPTK and raised a minibet with it... I think you're reading the HH wrong.

I think you played it perfectly. It turns out SB was just trying to steal with a minibet, but when MP calls after a bet and a raise, you have to give him credit for something better than TP. He's probably got a "monster" and is thinking about how to get the most cash out of it.

Btw, 76 gives a double belly buster so 64 isn't the only drawing hand on that board :)

Against a decent player this is an easy fold, you are out of postion and are most likely going to have to call another bet on the river if you call then check again. I would be carefull with trying to get tells based on how long it takes someone to act, people play slow for any number of reasons most of which have no bearing on how strong they are.

I'm not a huge fan of the raise on the flop, you have only a semi strong hand and no draw to improve. TPTK is not that strong especially when the top pair is a 9.

Well you raise to protect your vulnerable hand. If SB is bluffing and you just call, any overcards will make it hard for you to call another bet on the turn. Also, if he has a hand that is worse than yours but good enough to call... say... T9, you're getting more money into the pot. If he has some dirty two-pair like 53 you're probably getting a free card to draw out on him.

I think I play the hand exactly like laynegt did.
