My Biggest Pot Ever In A Dream Hand Part Deux

Postby Mad Genius » Sat May 28, 2005 10:42 pm

I get AKdd in the BB. One limper, SB completes, and I raise to 50. This is $5/10NL at Stars by the way. Only the limper calls. I have about $1700 and he has slightly less. Flop comes Qd6x2d, giving me two overs and the nut flush draw. I bet 80, he minraises to 160, and I make it 500 straight. After some deliberation, he calls. The turn is the 5d and I check. he bets 220 and I quickly move in for about 1150. He calls. The pot is well over 3k and I have the nuts.

Unfortunately my dream hand didn't quite work out as expected because villian had 66 and rivered a deuce to win. It was probably the most upset that I have ever been because of poker and probably ever will be.

And yes, this is really just a bad beat story disguised to my best.

sorry man...that's shitty.

that's 5/10 though. as long as you can handle the money you're dishing in and out...it's good.

I watched this hand and I understand why it made you angry.

I dont like the $500 reraise on flop. You have to think ahead. What was your plan if he called and you didnt turn a diamond? Push, check fold or check call? I dont like any of this. And what if he moved in on flop after your reraise? Call with ace high? You have commited more than 1/3 your stack and you know you will be a dog if you call.

You have two overcards but he is obviously very strong - looks like a set or if you are lucky 6xd/54d/43d. And if he is a morron with AQ/KQ you only have one overcard.

Sucks to lose with the nuts in a huge pot.

While I agree somewhat with you, I think you are being too result-oriented. His minraise on the flop doesn't necessarily tell me he has a set at all. That is precisely why I re-raised. I want to make him define his hand and disguise my hand as best as possible so when a diamond hits I am guaranteed his stack. My thinking is he doesn't have QQ, which means unless he has 66 or 22 he's folding to my significant re-raise on the flop. Once he called, it became clear to me that he had a set. My plan if I got called was to check any non ace or king and hope he gives me odds to draw (which I'm pretty sure he would have, seeing as to how he only bet 220 even after another diamond hit). I was folding to a flop allin because clearly my odds weren't close to being good enough to call. My turn may have been a mistake as I prefer an all-in in retrospect, but I don't find that to be a big deal because knowing that he had a set, I was sure he was betting the turn anyway.

I see what you mean. I just dont like to raise to define the other player's hand. What does he raise minimum with on flop that he will fold to a reraise? 99,88? I dont know.

I also like a push on turn instead of a checkraise. But as you say, not a big deal, the money were going in no matter what.

There are just different ways to play this hand

His min raise almost always means he has a set. How many times do I have to say that.
I would just call and try to draw.

If he had any brains he wouldve pushed all in on the flop after your reraise.
