JJ hand... good or bad play... Make the call

Postby Jeffm351 » Tue May 31, 2005 3:15 pm

Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em, $ BB (9 handed)

$200 tables Good play/bad play... let me have it!

saw flop|saw showdown

MP2 ($80.1)
MP3 ($279.35)
CO ($426.3)
Button (Villian)/ ($209.8)
SB ($201.74)
BB ($649.89)
UTG ($162.85)
UTG+1 ($196.7)
Hero ($206.8)

Preflop: Hero is MP1 with [Js], [Jc]. SB posts a blind of $1.
UTG calls $2, 1 fold, Hero raises to $10, 1 fold, MP3 calls $10, CO calls $10, Button (Villian)/ calls $10, 2 folds, UTG folds.

Flop: ($45) [3c], [Kh], [9c] (4 players)
Hero checks, MP3 bets $20, CO folds, Villian calls $20, Hero raises to $100, MP3 folds, Villian calls $80.

I didnt like the K on the flop, so I checked to see what the 2 remaining players would do... First guy bets $20 into a $50 pot and 2nd guy calls... hmmm looks pretty weak... Looked like a steal/or draw... maybe a set... so I tried a checkraise to take the pot right there representing AA/KK (set) or AK one fold, second guy calls...

Turn: ($265) [7s] (2 players)
Hero bets $96.80 (all in),
Villian calls $96.80.

River: ($458.60) [2s] (2 players)

Final Pot: $458.60

Results in white below:
Hero has Js Jc (one pair, jacks).
Villian has 8c 7c (one pair, sevens).
Outcome: Hero wins $458.60.

"Looks" pretty weak? Could you see him through your computer or something? Of course I'm just being a wise-ass but if you change the word "Looks" to "hmmmm, I HOPE he's pretty weak", then you are being more honest with yourself.

This is a cut and dried situation..You have JJ and there is a bet and an overcall with a King on the board...dump it.

Because you won this pot you may think you made the proper play but I think that most of the time you would be beat.

Glad that worked out for you and he didn't have AKc KQc or something like that which would be bet the same way and would definitely call the turn, which is what I expected when reading the hand.

I have mixed feelings about the play, if you know your opponent to play a draw like that, then every bet is a fine one. If you were fuzzy in your read I'm not so sure. I'm fine with pulling the trigger when you have a solid representation of your opponents hand in your mind whether you are right or wrong doesn't matter except to readjust your read.

I don't like the play...

even still...after that checkraise..you gotta figure he'll call whatever you have left (of course i assumed he had a better hand.)
