First hand bluff leads to set payoff

Postby kidluckee » Thu Jun 02, 2005 10:46 am

Hi all. UPF refugee who has browsed here before but now is taking the posting plunge.

This hand isn't too instructional but an example of playing a set very fast against someone who I thought was copping me (and draws all over the board).

Entering this particluar table, I posted in CO and was folded to, raised my 75s hoping to take it down but was called by both blinds. Flop was AQ3 with a flush draw and I made a pot-sized continuation bet and was called by BB. Turn was another A and after being checked to, I bet 2/3 pot and was called. River a 7 and we both checked. BB flopped a set and took it down with a boat. So, down 32 BB right off the bat, uggh.

But then the following hand happened about an hour later (and I hadn't gotten out of line again, but was playing usual fairly tight self ~17%). I had a feeling this guy was playing poker cop thinking I was BSing him again. I thought of making smaller river bet but felt an allin would be too tempting for him to resist thinking I was bluffing.

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em, $2 BB (8 handed)

CO ($16.90)
Button ($189.20)
SB ($357.55)
BB ($78)
Hero ($236.95)
UTG+1 ($232.45)
MP1 ($123.95)
MP2 ($240.30)

Preflop: Hero is UTG with [2d], [2c].
Hero calls $2, 2 folds, MP2 calls $2, 2 folds, SB completes, BB checks.

Flop: ($8) [2h], [Qs], [Ah] (4 players)
SB checks, BB checks, Hero bets $6, MP2 raises to $12, SB folds, BB folds, Hero raises to $28, MP2 calls $16.

Turn: ($64) [5s] (2 players)
Hero bets $50, MP2 calls $50.

River: ($164) [6d] (2 players)
Hero bets $156.95 (All-In), MP2 calls $156.95.

Final Pot: $477.90

Hero wins with set of deuces, and MP2 had .... A8o!

Very well played. It's a small but interesting line of plays where you can make a slight deviation on a particular hand based on a previous hand.

Nice to see a poker cop go down. I'm sure he muttered under his breath, "Fish got lucky this time"
