Forget the muppet plays... Should I have called the river...

Postby MVPSPORTS » Thu Jun 02, 2005 11:28 pm

This was my VERY FIRST HAND... So I didn't choose to play Q7o, and would have gladly folded to ANY kind of bet... I hit TP on the turn, still have my open-ended... that's gotta be worth $3, no...? Then I hit my straight, and get crapped on by another chaser... Basically, you guys would've called the river, right...?

BTW.. have you ever seen a worse slowplay than SB...

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em, $1.00 BB (9 handed)

MP1 ($100)
MP2 ($66.80)
MP3 ($77.10)
Hero ($100)
Button ($58.80)
SB ($59.85)
BB ($134)
UTG ($85.50)
UTG+1 ($94.35)

Preflop: Hero is CO with [Qs], [7c]. Hero posts a blind of $1.
3 folds, MP2 calls $1, MP3 calls $1, Hero (poster) checks, 1 fold, SB completes, BB checks.

Flop: ($5) [5d], [6s], [4c] (5 players)
SB checks, BB checks, MP2 checks, MP3 checks, Hero checks.

I usually like to bet my draws, but like I said, this was my first hand, and my butt hadn't even warmed up in the seat yet...

Turn: ($5) [Qc] (5 players)
SB bets $3, BB folds, MP2 folds, MP3 calls $3, Hero calls $3.

River: ($14) [8h] (3 players)
SB checks, MP3 bets $13, Hero calls $13, SB calls $13.

Final Pot: $53

Results in white below:
SB has 2c 3c (straight, six high).
MP3 has 9s 7s (straight, nine high).
Hero has Qs 7c (straight, eight high).
Outcome: MP3 wins $53.

No problem with how you played it in my mind. The sb played it horribly as he got greedy. The only reason you play this hand is to hit this type of flop but you got to protect it by actually betting.

I would have bet the flop....

but that's no big deal...

however....it's a sin not to raise that turn to like $10. Remember...selective aggression. You have TP, top end of a straight draw. Hopefully they fold to your raise...but if not...you still have outs. and they really have no idea what you have either.

Also..if they actaully put out a reraise....(like the sb should do here)..half the time they will give you great odds to see that last card with their damn min raise. :)

The 97 hand beating you sucks.....he might have folded out if you raised the turn though.

I agree with Kenny. I don't mind the check on the flop so much but once you have the TPSD on the turn I think you have to put in that raise, especially with your position. Take control of the hand and make them react to you on the river. In this particular case SB should reraise you enough to get you off your hand but as Kenny said, you're more likely to see a minraise, and then you still have odds to see the river (and MP likely doesn't go to the end).

I agree with everyone that posted so far.

I probably would have lost more money than you on the river, raising when I'm really just hoping that I'm tied. Calling is the right move.

I know I played it about as weak as possible, and if this hand would've been out of the BB, when I played for an hour or so... I probably would've been a little more aggressive with it... I think the fact that this was my VERY FIRST hand made me be so passive...
