JJ - Call this river?

Postby Stoneburg » Fri Jun 03, 2005 9:09 am

Normal Table No Limit 0.50/1.00
Rake: 1.85
Seat: 1 Stoneburg [Jc] [Js]
Seat: 2 kabbe47 (Dealer)
Seat: 3 TheWaynester
Seat: 4 anders_pe
Seat: 5 oorrvvaarr
Seat: 6 UPD
Seat: 7 ksuen33
Seat: 8 otley
Seat: 9 Ryssen77
Seat: 10 TheHawkDK

Haven't been at the table that long. The Villain and I have pretty much the same size stacks. I have no read on him.

------------------
OpeningBetRound
------------------
TheWaynester : Posts small blind 0.25
anders_pe : Posts big blind 0.50

oorrvvaarr : Folds
UPD : Folds
ksuen33 : Raises for 1.00
otley : Folds
Ryssen77 : Folds
Stoneburg : Raises for 4.50
kabbe47 : Went all-in 4.05

TheWaynester : Folds
anders_pe : Folds
ksuen33 : Calls for 3.50
------------------

I don't usually like to re-raise with JJ here but I hate mini-raises and want to know what I am up against. I see lots of miniraises with high SC's, low pairs etc as well as AA/KK. When he doesn't re-raise me I rule out AA/KK. I don't really care what the shortstack has.

Flop $13.80 [Ts] [6c] [4c]
------------------
ksuen33 : Bets 2.00
Stoneburg : Raises for 10.00
ksuen33 : Calls for 8.00
------------------

He leads with a weak bet and I raise to define my hand. When he just calls me I rule out a set at least. But since he calls my big raise he has to have something... so either he has a flush draw or a big pair... like QQ? Possibly the Ten paired him?

Turn $33.80 [5s]
------------------
TheHawkDK : Sits down 0.10
ksuen33 : Bets 2.00
Stoneburg : Calls for 2.00
------------------

He leads with another weak bet. I'm more and more worried that I am way behind and drawing to at best 2 outs. Here I chicken out and just call, hoping that my overpair is good and I get a cheap showdown. There's another flush draw on board and the straight is now possible, but he does not have 87 I'm sure. Because of the weak leading bets I do put him on a flush draw so I guess I should have pushed.

River $37.80 [8c]
------------------
ksuen33 : Went all-in 32.00
Stoneburg : Folds
ksuen33 : Receives returned betting money 32.00
------------------

Ok that club just sucked. The hand that now makes most sense to me is AKs. If he has QQ he wouldn't be valuebetting here would he? Or with TT? I've been afraid of QQ and the flush draw all the way and now that the flush arrives (and there's a one-card-straight on the table) I think for a while and fold.

Showdown
------------------
kabbe47 [ 5S, 5D, 5H, 10S, 8C - Three of a Kind ]
ksuen33 [ 10S, 10D, QD, 8C, 6C - One Pair ]

------------------
Result
------------------

ksuen33 Showed Cards (Winning) 23.69
kabbe47 Showed Cards (Winning) 12.26

ksuen33 [Qd] [Td]
Stoneburg [Jc] [Js]
kabbe47 [5d] [5h]

********************************************************

So he was betting Top Pair Decent kicker all the way. I don't even know if he thought the river bet as a bluff or a valuebet. Obviously I completely misread him and folded the best hand, so what should I have been doing differently here?

If I had been playing this hand, I would have probably thought the guy had QQ and would have folded to the river all-in also. Sometimes it sucks when the opponents show their cards because you need to figure out a way in which your fold was horribly weak tight or you completely misplayed the hand somehow, which I don't really think either applies here.

I think you should have raised the turn again, especially if you had him on a draw which didn't hit the turn... Not sure how much you have left, but I probably would've pushed the turn if it was near the pot size... Reading your hand, I was thinking either the draw like you were or A10, maybe QQ...

I'm not calling that river w/ 3 to a flush and 4 to a straight on the board...

Raise more preflop is my first suggestion...make the min raise pay.

I'm also with MVP on raising the turn.

Here's why:

I see this play all the time. It is a blocking bet 90% of the time.

Another suggestion....don't post your results when you first type up the hand. It will sway player's anaylsis.
