Bottom Set On Scary Board

Postby Ricardooon » Sat Jun 04, 2005 10:31 am

A hand from earlier today, just really want a little advice on this.

Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em, $ BB (7 handed)

SB ($53.5)
BB ($49.5)
UTG ($50)
MP1 ($62.2)
Hero ($65.4)
CO ($21.75)
Button ($45)

Preflop: Hero is MP2 with [3h], [3c]. SB posts a blind of $0.25.
2 folds, Hero calls $0.50, 2 folds, SB (poster) raises to $1.75, 1 fold, Hero calls $1.50.

Flop: ($4.50) [8s], [3s], [Qc] (2 players)
SB bets $2, Hero raises to $4, SB raises to $10, Hero calls $59.40 (All-In), SB calls $41.50 (All-In).

Turn: ($119.40) [6h] (2 players, 2 all-in)

River: ($119.40) [Kh] (2 players, 2 all-in)

Final Pot: $119.40

Results in below:

SB has Qd As (one pair, queens).
Hero has 3h 3c (three of a kind, threes).
Outcome: Hero wins $119.40.

This was a nice result for me. My question comes about how people would play this on the flop. After his raise preflop his flop bet seemed pretty pro-forma. Given there is only two players I see myself as unlucky if he is drawing but I am still pretty keen to shut out the draw. At the same time I want some value for this hand. He wasn't an especially goofy player though I didn't have the best read, just nothing jumped out from his stats on the few hands I had.

After a little thought I decided the min raise seemed a good play. I was loathed to call as I like to fast play my good hands. I would rather win a small pot than lose a big one. Also I figured if he flat calls me he would check on the turn so I get to access what I want to do if a scare card falls. As it happened world war three went off and I took it down.

I am just curious for thoughts since I do not think I am gaining value from my big hands as I am preoccupied with shutting down draws. Are there other ways to play these situations?

Remember this $50NL on Party so I expect sickness.

IMO I like raising...but not the minimum raise. The only thing you do is make the pot a little bigger "tempting" the fish with good draws to call you down. You gotta make them pay more.

This is what I was curious about. Its these kind of situations I keep coming against where I have a hand like a set or even two pair where I want some value but want to shut out the draw. I was experimenting with that min raise thing, hence why I posted it though thinking on it I am not giving a disincentive to keep drawing on me.

I shall go back to my drawing board and put a little more thought into these. I think I need to get my head into what I am trying to achieve.
