Obvious fold on the river or destined to lose my stack?

Postby Alchemist » Sat Jun 04, 2005 9:01 am

To be honest I wasn't fully concentrating on this hand at the time but looking back I still would have had trouble getting away from it. Here goes anywho.

Ultimate Bet No-Limit Hold'em, $.25 BB (10 handed)

SB ($13.95)
BB ($25.60)
UTG ($22.75)
UTG+1 ($15)
Hero ($62.65)
MP1 ($3)
MP2 ($29.95)
MP3 ($50.30)
CO ($15.90)
Button ($16.30)

Preflop: Hero is UTG+2 with [Jd], [Jh].
1 fold, Hero calls $0.25, 2 folds, MP3 calls $0.25, CO calls $0.25, 2 folds, BB checks.

Flop: ($1.10) [Td], [Jc], [Kd] (5 players)
BB checks, Hero bets $1.5, MP3 calls $1.50, CO folds, BB folds.

Turn: ($4.10) [2h] (3 players)
Hero bets $4, MP3 calls $4.

River: ($12.10) [3c] (3 players)
Hero bets $10, MP3 raises to $30, Hero calls $20.

Final Pot: $69.10

Results in white below:
Hero has Jd Jh (three of a kind, jacks).
MP3 has Qh Ac (straight, ace high).
Outcome: MP3 wins $69.10.

Not much you can do here. I would have raised preflop but I don't think that would have changed the how the hand played out. When he pops you on the river you have to be worried that he was slowplaying a hand b/c that 3 sure didn't make his hand. However, he could have been slowplaying 1010, or 2 pair, KK is highly unlikely b/c no pf raise from him. Given that I don't think there is any way I could lay this one down.

He just calls a pot-sized bet on the flop and turn, and then pops you back w/ a small raise on the river...do you really think he'd do that w/ just KJ or KT? 2 pair or a lower set is playing back at you by the turn...but I do think you have to call :( obviously, throw anything less than a set away here.

That's why you should check the river. Yes you have a set, but it's a scary board and he may be drawing. Also a hand like QJ may not call your river bet, but might take a stab after you check.

I agree with laynegt. Check the river to induce the bluff..and to save you money if he has a mosnter.

Rememeber...a big call from a decent player, is stronger then a raise.

I am not able to lay down a hand like that. But I would like to keep the pot small. What about a blocking bet? They dont seem to work for me but sometimes they do. In that case, with villain holding the nuts anything could happens. If I were villain I would push in because at that point he had enough info to be sure that you like your hand.A lot: Besides the bet could be considered a bluff.

I think that hand played like he did is determined for me to lose my stack. Is there anyone of you who can get away from it, having been this hand played as it was?
