high stakes poker between Barry and Daniel

Postby GeoC » Sat Jun 04, 2005 11:21 am

Watched Barry Greenstein and Daniel Negreanu playing a one-on-one table at Wynns yesterday. Looked to be 7-card stud, $4K/$8K blinds. When I left, Barry had most of the chips on his side of the table.

greensteins a pretty smart guy and I'd have to imagine that what he said was either a result of frustration of hearing people comment about his wtp wins or of how great some of the tournament pros are(if i considered myself great at something and constantly heard all these inferior people in my field compared to me and my peers i might get fed up too). Also it might be kind of a challenge to pick up some top tourney pros at their table you know how cocky some of them are and at that level you have to figure there is a lot of lot of wsop and wpt money to be lost at those top tables. but you are right kind of an a****** thing to say, but at his limits the people who would be offended and stay away are few from his games because of his comments and few and far between. So i'd say little his speech was +EV.

Ya know, it's great to be great at something, as Greenstein obviously is when it comes to poker. If you're playing professional poker, it's also great to have an ego and a chip on your shoulder.

It's another thing altogether to say that just because some players don't play in "your game" (the 2000/4000+ mixed game @ Bellagio) that they're not great at what they do. I'd love to hear what the other players he labels as great (Doyle, Chip Reese, Chau Giang, and Phil Ivey) have to say about his boorish comments. Say what you want about Daniel, but I hope Danny hands Greenstein's ass to him.

I also agree with rickjr's assessment. However, with players like Lederer, Ferguson, etc out there, to be labeling 5 as "great," including arrogantly yourself, and the rest as basically just "the rest" is a stretch. He's the kind of guy who would either not accept a challenge to play lower than 2/4K or who would play someone like me and lose, and basically say it was luck. Barry Greenstein (just like Sklansky, IMHO) is a boorish ass. I like what the man does, I respect him as a player, but he's an ass.

I hate to say it but I agree with him. Is he an arrogent ass??? Probably yes. I dont know the guy personally, so who am I to say. What he said is something I have read from other sources too. Thata alot of the players that people call great are broke that their one massive tournament win a year doesnt make up for the rest that they finish out of the money.

This might be my personal bias, being a side game player, but I strongly agree that it takes more skill to win in cash game then it does to win ocassionally in tounamnets.

Does it, Rhound? I am so happy to hear that from a great player like you, because I only have two month winning (cash games) and it s been impossible for me to win in tourneys. I dont get ITM...never! ever!

I still think I dont have the skills or the discipline to win at tourneys, that is why I think is more difficult to be a winning player at tourneys than it is to be one in cash games.

It is only my appreciation.
