AK and a coordinated flop

Postby kennyg » Sun Jun 05, 2005 3:15 pm

2/4 NL

My first round on the table. I have no read on my opponent accept he is a short stack. I have him covered.

Folded to me...I raise $16 with AKo. Only caller is LP opponent with the short stack.

FLOP $38
KQT rainbow
I bet $32. Opponent calls.

TURN$102
KQT 6 completes rainbow

I look and my opponent only has $134 left. I figure he must be a station with that kind of stack...I want him to pay dearly for drawing. I bet $90. He calls.

RIVER $282
KQT 6 8

Opponent only has $44 left. I move allin. He thinks a while and calls.

Results later.

Anybody play this hand differently? I thought the size of his stack realy limited my options.

Kenny I'm not a big fan of the way you played this, the only hand that he really could be drawing to is a J for an open ended draw and you are ahead of AQ ot A10, Other than that you are behind a lot of hands AJ, KQ, K10, J9, Q10. This is not a good flop for AK. I think after the size of your flop bet and his stack size you are pretty much going to have to push the turn, but I dont understand why you think that because he is short stacked he must be a calling station.

Hmmm, if you assume he'll call down with any piece of the flop (pair+draw or better, and he calls the river on pot odds)...

QJ - 24 ways
KJ - 16 ways
TJ - 24 ways
JJ - 12 ways
AQ - 18 ways
AT - 18 ways
Ahead = 124 ways

AJ - 24 ways
KQ - 12 ways
QT - 18 ways
KT - 12 ways
AA - 6 ways
KK - 2 ways
QQ - 6 ways
TT - 6 ways
J9 - 32 ways
Behind = 122 ways

Looks marginally +EV, especially since he may be an idiot playing Kxs (and KT and QT are marginal offsuit hands for him to play for a raise).

I don't understand. If you think I'm behind...why do you advocate pushing? isn't only a better hand going to call?

Kenny, if you are asking me?? If so, I think you are behind, after you get called on the flop, with this coordinated a flop, but there is $100 in the pot and your opponant has just over $100, unless he is a really passive player, he is going to push all in on the turn or river. Wth $100 in the pot and a marginally strong hand you cant fold, so you might as well put it in on the turn and hope he;s drawing. You are going to call his all-in so you might as well put the decision to your opponant.

Tough decisions. That bet on the turn basically was a push because now I really couldn't fold the hand with the pot odds.

Do you think checking and giving up on the turn is an option? I never really thought about that...

He ended up having KT and won the pot.

Kenny thinking about it I was pretty sure he was going to show down 2 pair, with an outsided chance of him floping the str8. Like I said before, you might as well push here, the problem is you dont even know what you want to see on the turn that makes you stronger. The J is the only card that improves your hand, you make 2 pair with the A your not happy, if you make trips with another K you still could be way behind. I do agree that the only thing that calls you has you beat, but I think he folds if he has a J, so maybe he fold 1/3 of the time , plus when he calls you have some outs even if they are just to split. So I think the all in on the turn is a +ev play but only marginally, either way it beats calling an all in, because you do add pot equitty. This is one of those times you wish both of you had $500 behind because you could check the turn and fold to a big bet.

push

Postby geewhiz » Sun Jun 05, 2005 10:43 pm

Kenny I think you played it fine.

This is why it's so annoying to play with short stacks.

There are many 1 pair/straight combos out there you have to push the turn to punish the drawers.

If he has 2 pair here i say pay him off
