Road Trip!

Postby Marm » Mon Aug 27, 2007 10:28 pm

Mrs. Marm and I are planning an extended road trip sometime next year, probably in the fall. We'll probably head west from here, and we really only have 2, maybe a third definite stops on the way. Yellowstone, Yosemite, and probably Glacier NP's; and probably in that order too . So its a western road trip mainly along the nothern US. Probably a 2 week trip

I'm looking for ideas on places to stop on the way. Will we be car camping, so resorts and such are out. I know theres a bunch of BTP'ers along the route, so if you guys know of any good places to check out, I'd like to hear them.

Couple of rules though:

1) Cheap. We're looking to do this on a budget. That's why we're camping.

2) Easy access. I'm not afraid of a little exertion, but my wife is practically disabled from a car wreck 10 years ago. Long hikes (>1-2mi) on bad terrain (or even flat terrain) are pretty much un-doable for us.

Really no location is out of the question yet, we're still accumulating ideas, so I'm curious to hear what you guys have to say.

That is absolutely the best time of year in the Pacific Northwest. There is not much rain, the ocean is the calmest of the year, and the beaches are usually sunny. Depending upon what time in the Fall, the Rockies might be very cold/snowy. I'd hit up Victoria, the Olympic Penninsula, head down to the Oregon coast, into northern California and the redwoods, to San Fransisco, then back up highway 80 for the quick freeway trip home. I'll be living along the nor. Cal. coast and would be happy to show you around.

Specifically as to your national parks - Glacier will probably be snow bound unless it is very early October. Ditto Yellowstone. Yosemite is famous for waterfalls, but they dry up in the mid-late summer, sometimes they are completely dry by fall. You would be setting yourself up for disappointment if you went there to see the falls.

I'm really thinking End of August to mId september, not really fall actually, Late summer. she can't take cold either. Yes, cold is 40f. For me, my personal best in a tent is -28f, so Theres no problem there.....

Not really going for the falls in Yosemite. I'm an ex-climber who never made it out west. I'm going for the domes and El Cap.
