I use AVG Free as an antivirus and anti-spyware. Zonealarm for a free firewall.

try ZoneLabs site for the latest version. www.zonelabs.com. They give it away there.
AVG is good (I'm using it now), but also look at Kaspersky (www.kaspersky.com). They have an installable AV, but they also have one that runs solely in IE. This way if you think your AV software itself is corrupted, you can scan (but not clean) with a clean virus list. Click the link in they upper right that says free scan.

Solid recommendations all, makes an old IT guy proud.
Only thing I would add: put a router between your cable-modem and your PCs.
A well-configured hardware firewall is much better than any software firewall.
