My fishy weakness

Postby poker2006 » Wed Jun 08, 2005 6:17 pm

This type of hand has occured a few times the last 2-3 weeks, and I have to learn to avoid it somehow. This is the hand:

Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em, $ BB (10 handed)

CO ($12.05)
Button ($44.7)
SB ($78.95)
BB ($79)
Hero ($84)
UTG+1 ($92)
UTG+2 ($109.13)
MP1 ($50.2)
MP2 ($97.03)
MP3 ($16)

Preflop: Hero is UTG with [Qc], [Ac]. SB posts a blind of $0.25.
Hero calls $0.50, UTG+1 calls $0.50, 2 folds, MP2 raises to $2, 5 folds, Hero calls $1.50, UTG+1 calls $1.50.

Flop: ($6.75) [3c], [3d], [2c] (3 players)
Hero checks, UTG+1 checks, MP2 bets $4, Hero calls $4, UTG+1 calls $4.

Turn: ($18.75) [6c] (3 players)
Hero checks, UTG+1 checks, MP2 bets $10, Hero raises to $25, UTG+1 calls $25, MP2 calls $81.03 (All-In), Hero calls $53 (All-In), UTG+1 calls $61 (All-In).

River: ($273.78) [Ad] (3 players, 3 all-in)

Final Pot: $273.78

Results in white below:
Hero has Qc Ac (flush, ace high).
UTG+1 has 3s 3h (four of a kind, threes).
MP2 has Kc Tc (flush, king high).
Outcome: UTG+1 wins $268.75. MP2 wins $5.02.

UTG1 is a weak tight good player playing 8% of hands raising only 1.5% over 330 hands, MP2 is loose playing 50% and raising 30% of hands over the 50 hands I had on him.

There was no raise preflop, no betting on the flop so I didn't know what UTG1 had. I was sure MP2 had the flush, and I was trying to get UTG1 out of the hand and build a pot heads up. The call from UTG1 worried me, but for some reason I thought he must have an overpair to this small board. It looks like he only raises AA/KK, so it seemed reasonable that he could have 88 or better. I just didn't see how that flop would hit him, being such a super tight player.

After MP2 went all in, there were $160 in the pot and I had to call $50. Should I be able to lay this down? In retrospect I should have given more respect to the weak tight player but it's tought because I have to act before him and he's slowplaying.

QUESTION: I would like some advice on how you would play this hand at each step, and whether that allows you to get away from the hand cheaper.

Should I just check-call all the way with a paired board or just fold (seems too extreme)? I'm pretty sure UTG1 would have raised if I call, and maybe I would have been dragged into the pot anyway.

My new rule: "Do not draw to a flush on a paired board with more than 1 player in the hand !". My problem is when I want to get up against a weak player I know I have beat, but then get toasted by a good player that I wasn't expecting to stay in the hand.

If MP2 is really raising 30% of the hands (I'm guessing 30% of the 50% he playes, ie: 15%) I might just re-raise all-in preflop. Assuming I don't, I either lead out on the flop (and either go all-in, call (if I have odds) or fold to a raise depending on who raises me) or go for a check-raise. On the turn I'm going to think I am good and lose my stack.

Umm... so I guess the only difference is that I would be quicker about losing the stack and not prolong it like you did ;)

i don't really see anything that wrong w/ how you played it. your flop play was a bit passive though...in fact, i would've believed I was a huge favorite on this flop w/ two overs and the A-high flush draw against an aggressive MP2, so I definitely say lead out here w/ a big bet (w/ the intention of pushing in against MP2 if he raises you) or checkraise big. and i guess in that case you would've probably found out you were behind sooner...

when UTG+1 calls your turn checkraise you know you're in trouble...but the pot's so big, I think you have to continue.

in general, sure, don't make a habit of drawing to a flush on a paired board, but in this hand you had the A-high flush draw and a flop w/ only one real set possibility (22) in a 3-handed raised pot...if you want to draw to the flush, this is definitely a fine time.
