Before upgrading more parts, there are some basic software steps you can take to smooth out your performance. Take no offense from my recommendations, but there are a lot of infected computers out there, and slow/sluggish performance is a sign of infection.
It does not matter which version of windows you are using, you will need to go to Windows Update and get all the critical security updates available for your OS.
You need a good antivirus program, AVG from grisoft.com is a decent free antivirus program.
Lavasoftusa has a program called Ad-Aware that is free and removes adware and tracking cookies.
Google for a program called Spybot: Search and Destroy, it is a highly recommended spyware removal program.
Ater installing all 3 of these, you will need to update their definitions(check for updates button), and run full system scans with each of them
Which operating system do you have? WinXP? Win2000? WinME? Win98?
I would recommend getting WinXP(SP2) if your system will support it, there are many security fixes that are built into the code that is just an afterthought on the earlier versions.
As for the graphics card question, you need to tell me what model of compaq presario you have, some of the newer cards have higher requirents for voltage and slot than the older cards. I do not want to recommend a card that is incompatible with your system.
Last night I stayed up late playing poker with Tarot cards. I got a full house and four people died.
