Too Aggressive for my own good? (PT stats inside)

Postby Jux » Sat Jun 11, 2005 7:00 pm

Lately my aggressiveness has got me into many bad situations where i walk into a slowplay or check raise. Here are some PT stats:

Total Hands: 7,681
VP$IP: 20.39% (1,566 out of 7,681)
PFR%: 4.6%
Flop AF: 3.88
Turn AF: 3.57
River AF: 4.72
Total AF: 3.88
5.64 BB/100 (How's this for 50 NL?)

Under excessions auto-rate catagories http://livepokerforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3164
I am rated as an Ultra-Aggressor which I'm not too happy about. I'd rather be an eagle

I'm starting to lay down high PP and TP when I know I'm beat, but because I'm so aggressive I tend to lose alot doing so. Sometimes I have to call when I know I'm beat because I'm so pot commited like in this hand:

Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em, $ BB (10 handed)

MP2 ($29.65)
MP3 ($62.8)
CO ($27.9)
Hero ($49.85)
SB ($21.35)
BB ($23)
UTG ($47.8)
UTG+1 ($22.05)
UTG+2 ($32.5)
MP1 ($59.95)

Preflop: Hero is Button with [Kc], [Ks]. CO posts a blind of $0.5. SB posts a blind of $0.25.
3 folds, MP1 calls $0.50, 2 folds, CO (poster) checks, Hero raises to $2, 2 folds, MP1 folds, CO calls $1.50.

Flop: ($5.25) [Td], [6s], [4d] (2 players)
CO checks, Hero bets $5, CO calls $5.

Turn: ($15.25) [Qs] (2 players)
CO checks, Hero bets $15, CO calls $20.90 (All-In), Hero calls $5.90.

River: ($57.05) [5s] (2 players, 1 all-in)

Final Pot: $57.05

Results in white below:
CO has 6c 6d (three of a kind, sixes).
Hero has Kc Ks (one pair, kings).
Outcome: CO wins $57.05.

I'm thinking about slowing down on turns when people call, but I don't like the idea check folding/calling. I want to improve my play, but I don't know how to proceed.
Any thoughts, comments?

I'm by no means an expert but your river aggression seems to be way too high. Good players' aggression usually drops (a lot) from the flop to the river, yours actually goes up.

The only thing you should have done different in the hand above is raise more preflop I think.

Yeah I agree, my river AF probably is too high. I was surprised when I was looking over my stats that it was that high. The only explanation I can think of is that I don't see many rivers as opposed to flops and turns, and if I'm to the point where I'm at the river, I'm pretty sure that I have the best hand and I'm going to be aggressive with it.

Oh man ! Why did you call that reraise on the turn?!

This player calls your 4x BB preflop raise. Usually this means:
AA ( would have reraised you ), AK, AQ, AJ, QQ, KK, JJ, TT, pocket pair, or KQ (iffy)...

The flop looks like rags. I would have personally bet 1/2 the pot with so few in the hand. I don't find KK worth too much more than this. But he CALLED YOU !! This is a classic trap!! Nobody calls with a draw to a pot sized bet, He would need 15+ outs for that, and as you can see, none of the likely hands are remotely close.

At this point my liist for possible hands are now ( took out drawing hands ):
QQ, KK, JJ, TT, maybe AT if he is a weak player.

The problem with overaggression is the need to top yourself each additional round. I generally slow down on turns in this situation. Again, maybe 1/2 pot size bet here, but then he RE-RAISES YOU !!! FOLD !!!! This is a set. Even looking at the list of possible hands:

AA( beats you ), QQ, KK (unlikely ), JJ , TT( Beats You ) , 99, 88, 77, 55, 33, 22 ( all are unlikely to call a pot size bet on flop with these unless he figures you for AK or AQ ), 66 ( Beats you ), and 44 (beats you ). Of these I would guess he would only reraise to anyhand that beats you.

You really only beat 1 or 2 hands here. I wouldn't rule out a J9 but he doesn't have pot odds. Some people don't obey pot odds all the time though :)

I don't think adding more aggression was the problem. Like I said, KK is usually a 1/2 pot size for me. Some people are more aggressive than I, doesn't make a pot size bet a worst of a play though.

Only called the re-raise on the turn because it was 5.90 into a capped $51 pot. I knew I was beat and pot odds didn't justify a 5% miracle, but at that point I felt I was to pot-committed not to call the extra 5.90.
I bet the pot well because, I always be the pot when I bet/raise. Me = Newbie, so I don't know when to bet half the pot, all the pot, or overbet the pot, at least at my current skill level.

Nobody calls with a draw to a pot sized bet
Been to Party much?
