Christmas eve dinner at my place (Swedish Style). My knowledge of english words for foodstuffs is somewhat lousy but Ill try
Cold foods:
Gravlax (Raw salmon in 50% sugar, 50% salt, dill) Keep in fridge for 2 days or bury in backyard for a couple days if its cold outside... Grav = Grave => Buried. Served with a sweet mustard sauce.
Smoked Eel
Smoked salmon
Pickled Herring (Raw herring in a water+vinegar+sugar mixture. Add some red onion, a bayleaf and some spice that I have no clue what it is called in english but could possibly be allspice)
Smoked leg of lamb
A baked ham with mustard+breadcrumb cover. .
Boiled eggs with roe (if roe = fisheggs..)
Salted cucumbers
Knäckebröd
A salad on oranges, red onion and some dressing (Sweet to go with all the salty stuff)
Warm dishes:
Meatballs
Small sausages without much flavor (Cocktail sausages according to whatamieating.com)
Ribs (I usually do them with honey + ginger glaze)
Boiled potatoes
That is basically it. I probably left out some small stuff like some veggies.
To Drink:
Beer (You'll need a lot. Everything is very saltty. A light lager for the thirst-quenching. Ale or Porter goes well flavor-wise.
Snaps. (My favorite is grain spirits (like vodka) flavored with wormwood, a.k.a Bäska droppar which loosely translates to "Bitter drops". An aquired taste but once you appreciate it it is VERY good)
