Sheppard Book was a character that never got fully explored. Joss Whedon always said ( I ended up reading a lot of the fan sites after doing what you did) There was a huge back story to him that never got explored.

Apparently he is much more than just some monk. He seems to have some connections within the Alliance government. Of all the questions and unexplained stories in that series, his is the biggest.

"Serenity" is probably a lot better if you have watched the series and become familiar with the characters. I remember several jokes that wouldn't have been as funny... Jane's comment about wanting to hear more of Kaylee's battery operated device, for example.

There are plenty of allusions to Book's past in the series, but the movie contains a few more, indicating that Book might have been an operative himself or have been high enough up in the food chain to know what the operatives are like.

Too bad the series was canceled. Whedon's second seasons of Buffy and Angel were pretty bad ass. Seems like it takes him and the other writers some time before they get comfortable with the characters.

Fox killed it with a combination of internal politics and incompetance (showing episodes out of order, shifting it round the schedules, making them change characters/plots etc). Great show, though. I didn't like the film as much, but it did a decent job of closing most of the story arcs of the series. Such a shame it got cancelled just as the series was starting to get REALLY good though, I thought it was a brilliant little show and shaping up to be something really special. Given the huge fanbase it has, it's pretty perplexing that it's not been resurrected, one way or another.
