stoney, how and why did you root for England? I am amazed..

Good thing is that the better team won and this might actually benefit English national team in a way... IF they understand what happened to them and why it happened.. There's a lesson in this...well, gogogogo Image

I like England and have had them as my "second team" (after Sweden) for as long as I can remember. A lot of my favorite players have been English and I prefer the Premier League and its playing style to the other national leagues. That's why I root for them.

However, I have no illusions about them being a world class team. I'd say they're on par with Sweden, Denmark etc in what I would call group 3. Group 1 teams being Brazil etc and Group 2 being Spain, Chez etc.

Croatia was definetely the better team in the match (or at least the half I watched) and by far superiour in the group as a whole, as the table shows. They are just much more technical and much more tactically aware. England has great problems in both those areas. They can't control the ball, only have at best a handfull of players with good technique and are embarrasingly bad in the tactics department.

If you compare Sweden with England you will find some interesting things in my opinion. I would say that England has a much better squad on paper. Only two swedish players would make it into the English lineup (Zlatan and Ljungberg), yet, I would claim that Sweden has outperformed them over the last decade. With a, on paper, much weaker squad. Why is that? I think there are several reasons:

1. Pressure. For some reason, a big portion of England seems to think that their team is world class and should be competing with Brazil, Italy et al. That's just not realistic. In Sweden, we're *happy* when we qualify to a world or euro cup, in England it is *expected*. If Sweden makes it past the group stages in a cup, it's a *success*, if England goes out in the quarter finals it's a *failure*. Just not realistic.

2. Utilising the material. I think we are more realistic about the qualities of our team. We know what we're good at (physique, defending, teamplay) and what we're not good at (technique, the passing game, controling matches) and try to play to our strengths. Sure, a lot of fans whine when we hit long balls or complain that we're not dribbling or making enough moves, but that's not our strength. We defend hard for 90 minutes, backup and help eachother, try to not conceede goals and score on the (few) opportunities we get.

England seems to believe that they're Holland or Argentine. England should play like they are used to in the premiership. Not like Arsenal plays (not that there are any englishmen there), but more like squads like ManU and more traditional teams play. High pressure and direct attacks, using the flanks a lot to feed balls to central strikers in a 4-4-2 system. Even though Sven was somewhat successful with his low pressure defense I think it is the completely wrong way for the team to play. They don't have the technical ability for it and would be playing to their weakness instead of their strength.

In my opinion England *should* be in "Group 2" together with other top European teams (but not the elite), but they won't be unless they get more realistic objectives and start doing what they're good at instead of trying to be someone else.

I think there's a lot of truth in what Stone's written, but at the heart of the English problem is the dilemma that every English football fan is keenly aware of: that less than stellar English players are earning ridiculous sums of money out of all proportion to their ability and achievements.

On top of this, we're expected to tolerate their embarrassingly uncool behaviour (rampant and vulgar materialism, vile attitudes to women and the general public etc), as evidence by our captain and A1 idiot John Terry during another night out puking on the floor of a disco between the 2 latest qualification games. I'm all in favour of people getting hammered, but there's a time and a place for everything.

I used to think we had at least 2 "world class" players ie players that any time would be pleased to have, Gerrard and Rooney; now I realise we have only Rooney, as Gerrard hasn't played particularly well for England since the 5-1 defeat of Germany in Sven's first game (about 6 years ago I think!).

This is nothing new of course - the '66 WC winning team were a bunch of decent hard working players who made full use of home advantage to beat a superior W German team (heresy but fact, as anyone can see for themselves from the match DVD that's available), but contained no "world class" players other than Banks and maybe Charlton.

My view is now simple: the only teams that can REALLY play football they way we all know it should ideally be played (ie in the main along the ground, to feet) are those from Latin countries (Holland in the early '70s were the exception that proves the rule).

The best that Anglo Saxon/Slavonic teams can hope for is to recognise that they're second best in the areas of ball control, touch, vision etc and place greater emphasis on physical strength and stamina, team play and a sense of unity, much as Germany have done for a long time with great success.

Suggesting that "England should play like they are used to in the premiership" and citing Man Utd's "direct attacks, using the flanks a lot to feed balls to central strikers" in support of this overlooks the fact that their fast and lethal wing counter attacks come from foreign players, and that England have no equivalents. Remove those players from Man Utd and you get what happened yesterday - a poor performance resulting in a loss to a team like Bolton.

The hopelessly out of touch FA now need to appoint an England manager with experience of working with footballers with enormous egos and limited abilities. To my mind giving the job to Capello would be counter productive, good manager though he is; I'd much rather see Klinsmann do it, though I wouldn't be too disappointed to see Redknapp in the job, supported by someone with experience of international competitions (Pearce?).

I'm guessing O'Neil is going to get it and if he does I think it is a good choice. José doesn't seem a realistic choice, and even if he's a great manager I don't think he's the right man for England with regards to tactical style. O'Neil would be my first choice.

Actually I think the *very* best manager for the national team would be Alex Fergusson but that will never happen.
