Yes, you're right about the great diversity in the US, and it is like several countries rolled into one: albeit countries with much in common and relatively little history.

I think the paid leave factor is valid though as most people here (in "unambitious Communist Europe", lol@MK) get 5-6 weeks, allowing for longer journeys etc.

My suggestion would be to start of in Barcelona for a few days with some great food, sightseeing and nice beaches.
Then take the train to Cannes/Nice for a few days, continue the road to Monaco (visit Monte Carlo obviously), throw in some more places in the italian riviera and continue down to Rome for a few days and then home.
You will need 2 weeks though.

I was in Greece and I liked it.. There's a lot of things to see, and you can have a good time as well...

Here's a place you might want to go to there... ideal for honeymoon imo... download it.. it's powerpoint slideshow...
