BLUES

Postby Felonius_Monk » Thu Jun 23, 2005 4:23 pm

Out of interest, am I the only blueshead on this board? I know I managed to get Flopmyflush into a bit of Buddy Guy (who f***in ROCKS, btw!) a while back, but I can't believe that a guy born in frickin' SCOTLAND is the only person here who loves the world's greatest music? Come on now!

Incidentally, I do know my name is jazz influenced :) I love jazz too, but the 8-bar stuff is my first love..... Get me drunk and I'll play the meanest harmonica this side of tightwad's last boyfriend... and, just for a bit of context, that guy eclipsed the sun from 2 continents away...

PS. The first person to work out the REAL name of the person who first quoted my signature, I will credit $5 onto a poker account of their choice :)

Bah, the only blues stuff I can find is Buddy Guy.

I'm just guessing here, but was it charlie christian?

And btw, although blues is good, and I love playing it, classical guitar and good melodic metal totally beat blues six ways from sunday

i'm a blues fan monk!! I was just listening to some john lee hooker.
Vinny: Why are we stopped here? What's wrong with that spot?
Tyrone: It's too tight.
Vinny: Too tight? You could land a jumbo f*cking jet in that.

Fuck ME!!!!! The hook is the man. Totally blown out of the water in every respect, totally, by the best blues players in the ol' blues pantheon, but fuck that, he could make anything sound the most emotionally charged song ever. True enough, the guy did some crap, but have you everLISTENED to the waterfront? That song is in a serious minoriy of tunes that makes me genuinely emotional. And if ANYONE can pick me out any song in the history of mankind that is more vicious than "I'm Bad Like Jesse James" I would probably HATE to hear it.

Top ten John Lee Hooker Tunes (for anyone who wants to try some):

10) Catfish Blues
9) Crawling Kingsnake
8) Is It Hip
7) Bottle Up And Go
6) One Bourbon One Scotch One Beer
5) My Dream
4) I'm In The Mood (the one with Bonnie Raitt, fuck me is that cool!)
3) Thought I heard (if you have a soul, this is a good one to try... chilling, though)
2) Boom Boom (off the jeans commercial and the blues bro's... still brilliant)
1) The Waterfront/ I cover the waterfront (both astonishing.... maybe a big "songs relating to stuff you've done in real life" thing that makes no sense to anyone else... but still brings a monk-like tear to my hard-working face every now and then)

If you're not a blues fan don't listen to hooker under any circumstances, as you may mistaken him for "an old man yelling a bit". Word to my ex GF for that description.

Yeah, occasionally a mistake... however, TW, in his I-like-the-doors-but-have-no-fucking-idea-what-their-best-songs-actually-are guise might learn something.

LA fucking woman indeed.

I'm pretty sure that's Albert King who originally did Born Under a Bad Sign, but I sometimes get my 'Kings' mixed up.

Like most white kids born in the '60s, I learned about the blues from guys like Clapton and the Allmans and Jimmy Page. As a guitarist I really dig Buddy Guy, but to me nothing matches the vocal stylings of Muddy Waters. The closest anyone has ever come to getting his 'feel' (IMO) is Paul Rodgers on his Muddy Waters tribute album.

Gregg Allman is the best white blues singer ever, Gary Moore is the best 'rock' blues guitarist ever, and Stevie Ray Vaughan is just the best ever.

BTW Monk, in your orignal post you mentioned liking the 8 bar stuff, but 99% of your traditional (and untraditional) blues is 12 bar. Just an FYI, hehe.
