Fuck ME!!!!! The hook is the man. Totally blown out of the water in every respect, totally, by the best blues players in the ol' blues pantheon, but fuck that, he could make anything sound the most emotionally charged song ever. True enough, the guy did some crap, but have you everLISTENED to the waterfront? That song is in a serious minoriy of tunes that makes me genuinely emotional. And if ANYONE can pick me out any song in the history of mankind that is more vicious than "I'm Bad Like Jesse James" I would probably HATE to hear it.
Top ten John Lee Hooker Tunes (for anyone who wants to try some):
10) Catfish Blues
9) Crawling Kingsnake
8) Is It Hip
7) Bottle Up And Go
6) One Bourbon One Scotch One Beer
5) My Dream
4) I'm In The Mood (the one with Bonnie Raitt, fuck me is that cool!)
3) Thought I heard (if you have a soul, this is a good one to try... chilling, though)
2) Boom Boom (off the jeans commercial and the blues bro's... still brilliant)
1) The Waterfront/ I cover the waterfront (both astonishing.... maybe a big "songs relating to stuff you've done in real life" thing that makes no sense to anyone else... but still brings a monk-like tear to my hard-working face every now and then)
If you're not a blues fan don't listen to hooker under any circumstances, as you may mistaken him for "an old man yelling a bit". Word to my ex GF for that description.
