Most of the time, "too cool for us" is not a particularly high bar to jump....

.....

Anyway, it is absolutely true that (most? all?) of Europe has an infinitely more comfortable safety net than we have in the US. Everything from welfare to cost of education to medical care to unemployment to time off from work is better there. Americans work more hours, take fewer vacations, pay way more for medical care, have much higher bankruptcy rates, generally have a less secure life ... and overall, on average, make more money. However, the studies I have read indicate that it is no longer the case that Americans make more money per hour worked than all Europeans; I'm pretty sure the French passed us in that regard in the last year or two, and other countries may be ahead of us too, I'm not sure.

Last night I stayed up late playing poker with Tarot cards. I got a full house and four people died.

ZOMG some realism in this thread at last, from K3nt. Terrible news for the US that even the bureaucratic and uncompetitive French have surpassed it in earnings/hr. What is the world coming to? Time for a rethink maybe?

ED, it's pretty hard to take patriotic claims made about American wine seriously from someone who's never so much as set foot in France. Ditto, perhaps even more so given beer's dislike of travel, with your views on ale when you've never been to England. For this reason, it seems pointless discussing this any more with you until you remove your stars 'n' stripes glasses.

LD: some interesting links, thanks. I've got to say, if the compliers of the Best Beers of England list really think that Fullers' best beer is a porter, then that says a lot. I mean, porter's a novelty beer, not the sort that makes you want more and more of it: every time I've been with someone who's started off the evening on a porter, they've soon switched to a bitter.

Maybe loads of good quality micro breweries have sprung up It's 10+ years since I was in CA? As I said, what was available was decent enough (though not exactly moreish), but not very widespread.

I guess the problem with assessing international beers against each other is always going to be one of calibration. When many good English ales (and probably American beers too) often don't travel particularly well around a country that's not exactly huge, I'm not sure ho you pit each beer at it's best against the others?

Also, alcohol is famous for tasting far better in its country of origin than at home. It's a common occurrence here for people to gorge themselves on a delicious tasting foreign wine or beer while on holiday, and bring home large quantities of it only to find it borderline undrinkable - the holiday romance syndrome?

[quote="excession"[I also (under EU legislation) have the absolute right not to work more than 48 hours/week. .[/quote]

How does this work for more professional jobs like doctors, attornies, etc. (I think you are an attorney no? Is it just for hourly employees.

FWIW, Ice's report on his time off is not exactly representative of the US population because Ice works in the civic life and has decades of tenure there (i.e., more time off).

Typical US stiff gets 2 weeks off. Some company's make you use sick days against those 2 weeks.
