Poker is a game of suckouts...

...at least it is today. So in order to lift my sagging spirits, I'm going to tell a story.

I love playing tournaments. This story happened during my last one.

It's early on in the tourney. I'm at a table with 6 zombies and 3 other players. Zombies, of course, being folks who've registered but for some reason didn't show up. Check-and-fold is all they do.

Anyway, I'm chip leader at the table with one other guy really close. I tangled with him in a hand and he completely sucked out. I had 2 pair on the flop and there was zero possibility for a straight or flush draw. I bet pot at it and my nemesis called.

Turn brought a card that might help with a straight. I bet out again. Nemesis called.

River brought his straight. Runner-runner-straight. ARGH!

Now he's the chip leader at the table, but I've got him pegged as a target.

As more hands are played, I watch him closely. He's sucking out a LOT - making big hands on the river when he hasn't the odds to be making the calls. He's also begun to push people off hands with his stack. Loose/aggressive...

A bit later another hand comes by that I'm heads-up with my target. Again I have 2 pair. Again he calls and calls and calls (though I'm not betting all that big - I'd rather stay in the tourney than get busted by a lucky maniac). The result of that hand though was that I was the chip leader on the table again.

Next hand comes, I have Ax suited ([c]) in one of the blinds (don't remember which). 2 limpers to me, including my nemesis, and I'm in. The flop comes down all [c], one high and two low. If there's a straight flush to be had, it's mine. And I've already got the nut flush.

First to act, I bet minimum. I did this for several reasons. First, I wanted to show that I'm not afraid of the flush, and maybe make the bet look like a steal attempt. Second, I knew my nemesis would call, unless he had absolutely nothing. If he had nothing, I'm not going to be taking his stack on the river, either. Third, I figured it's somewhat a value bet if anyone else chooses to stay in. Fourth, if someone had two pair, I wanted them to pay at least something to draw.

Only my nemesis called.

The turn brought another [c], a low one but still not making me a straight flush. Here, I checked. I wanted to show that even though I wasn't concerned about pocket clubs, I might be concerned about a high club. That and I figured if I showed any weakness at this point, my nemesis wouild throw a lot of chips in to try to shake me off the pot.

I couldn't have been happier when he pushed all-in. I had him covered, just barely.

When I called, he showed K[c] + rag. Bully for him and thanks for playing. By the time I typed "bye." into the chat, I had the chips in my stack.

He didn't rebuy.

OK... this was supposed to make me feel better about today's serial suckout poker I suffered through... but it didn't. Time to go eat some barely cooked cow... 8-)

good one BP!

Last night in a MTT I raise the blind from 20 to 100 with QQ from the button. The SB completes as does late position. The flop is A rag rag. LP bets 200 I fold as does SB. SB then types in "Hey cowgirl what the * you raising for if your only going to fold you * hole".

I ask him why did you call if all your just going fold. I go on to tell him that now I am going to take pleasure in knocking him out. Two hands later I get AA in the SB he is the BB. I raise the blind to $100 again. He pushes all in. It is folded around to me. I call. He turns over J,10o. At least he didn't stay around and hassle me from the rail.

I had a funny one on paradise a couple of months ago. This guy comes to my table huge stacked. 10k in chips like 10 min into the tourney. I doubled up and had 3k. He stits down and raises first hand some guy comes back over the top all in he calls. Big stack has KK other guy has QQ. Flop is Qxx, the guy doubles up. The villian goes nuts lucky BS, you moron, etc..... I hate whiny player so I start mocking him. He is swearing up a storm calling me every name in the book. I find it all very funny. By the time I have about 4k in chips he is down to about 7k. I get AK i raise to 500 he calls flop is AAK, I check he goes all in I call he has A7 drawing dead I am up to 8k he is around 3k. He starts swearing again, calls me lucky, a moron, bad player etc... So my response is to tell him he needs to win some more hands so he can donate me more money, that he is my bitch and I'm going to bust him. This is the only time I use anything bordering on profanity. One or two hands later I get AA, I limp he raises all in. I sit for a couple of seconds and type in bye bye and call. He is playin j/8 or something like that and he loses. This guy spends the next 2 hrs calling me names telling me he is coming to kick my ass. While I play. It was a $1 buy in with 1000 players, all I wanted was some entertainement and this guy sure provided it. I cashed , I think I won $4 and he was there to tell me what a moron I was. Than to top it all off, i got an e-mail from paradise telling me that due to my use of profanity by using Bitch I was on probabtion for a week. It was all quite hillarious.
