Friday Fun: How Playing Like a Fish Pays Off

Postby majakovskij » Fri Jul 08, 2005 11:51 am

I was tilting at a $50 table. I had been taking a couple of bad beats and had lost most of stack. My buddies were in the backyard waiting for me to join them for a beer and bbq. So I decided to throw my chips in there and let off some steam. MP2 is a solid, tight player. I've played a couple of hundred hands with him.

Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em, $ BB (10 handed)

saw flop|saw showdown

Button ($58.9)
SB ($56.9)
BB ($45.9)
UTG ($49.5)
UTG+1 ($54.6)
UTG+2 ($48.75)
Hero ($16.58)
MP2 ($71.55)
MP3 ($67.2)
CO ($59.85)

Preflop: Hero is MP1 with [Js], [Qh]. SB posts a blind of $0.25.
1 fold, UTG+1 calls $0.50, 1 fold, Hero calls $0.50, MP2 calls $0.50, 3 folds, SB (poster) completes, BB checks.

Flop: ($2.50) [Ks], [8d], [9s] (5 players)
SB checks, BB checks, UTG+1 bets $0.5, Hero calls $0.50, MP2 raises to $2, SB calls $2, BB folds, UTG+1 calls $1.50, Hero calls $1.50.

I was 80% certain that MP2 was on a flush draw. Fold? With a gutshot and a runner-runner? Not a chance in hell! Ha, ha!

Turn: ($10.50) [As] (4 players)
SB checks, UTG+1 checks, Hero bets $10, MP2 calls $10, SB folds, UTG+1 folds.

'So, you made your flush, huh? Good for you.' Fold? Now? With 9 outs to a second nut flush? Think again, buddy -- I'm pot bettin'!

River: ($30.50) [5s] (2 players)
drebreton bets $4.
CHIPBEAVER raises [$8].
drebreton is all-In [$4.08]

Notice how I tried to save 8 cents. That pissed MP2 off, obviously. 'You puttin' me all-in for my last dineros? Have it your way then, baby! I'M CALLIN'!'

Final Pot: $30.50
Main Pot: $30.50, between Hero and MP2. > Pot won by Hero ($30.50).

Results in white below:
Hero has Js Qh (flush, ace high).
MP2 has 6s 8s (flush, ace high).
Outcome: Hero wins $30.50.

If only I had been playing with more chips, I thought for a second. But, as I came to my senses, I knew I would never had played this way with a full stack.

'Nice catch," MP2 wrote. I knew he hated me. I left the table and went for a beer. Cheers, folks!

You know you misplayed it but he misplayed it pretty badly himself.
