2/4nl AK hand. thoughts/comments?

Postby Stelvask » Sun Jul 10, 2005 4:36 pm

Anyone play this hand diferently?

2/4nl on stars. UTG has a VP$IP of 50.82, a PFR% of 11.48, and an aggression factor of 1.90 (but 3.25 on the flop).

/EDIT: About half of the preflop raises he had been so far had been min raises like this one. I felt fairly confident that i was up against an verifiable muppet - namely loose and randomly aggressive.

I felt if i was behind i'd hear from him on the turn. when he called my raise it occured to me that i could be behind to a flopped set. i had the intention of folding on the turn if i was check raised, and wound up better smaller than i should have (perhaps i should have bet closer to $100?).

when he bet into me on the river i thought he could have another AK, and be hoping to show it down against what he feared was a floppset set. I was somewhat worried that he'd show me [Qs][Js], but i felt he would have bet bigger than 1/9th of the pot with that hand. in the end i went with my read and looked at it as a blocking bet.

Anyone not push here?

Also, if he checks to you on this river, what's your play?

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em, $4 BB (8 handed)

Button ($332)
SB ($121.95)
BB ($615.05)
UTG ($425)
UTG+1 ($700.20)
Hero ($472.40)
MP2 ($556)
CO ($126.05)

Preflop: Hero is MP1 with [Kh], [Ad].
UTG raises to $8, UTG+1 calls $8, Hero calls $8, 4 folds, BB calls $4.

Flop: ($34) [7c], [2s], [As] (4 players)
BB checks, UTG bets $16, UTG+1 folds, Hero raises to $46, BB folds, UTG calls $30.

Turn: ($126) [Td] (2 players)
UTG checks, Hero bets $75, UTG calls $75.

River: ($276) [Kc] (2 players)
UTG bets $32, Hero raises to $343.4.

I'll post the rest after i get some feedback

I think i wouldve been much more careful with this hand. A min raise UTG usually means some sort or pair (could be AA). If he has a pair and is playing the hand all the way to showdown then he could have a set.

I think I check behind on the turn.

After seeing the way he played the rest of the hand, I cant imagine he has a set, but I dont think the all in is necessary. I think I wouldve raised the river to something he could call with a hand you beat. Maybe $150?

I'm definitely slowing down on this hand, even after making your top two pair. I fear a set after his call of your raise and look to get to showdown without pressing too hard.

sorry ice, i forgot to mention in the original post, about half of his preflop raises were min raises, so i immediatly felt i could rule out AA as a possibility if only because he was making this play so often, i'll edit that in the post

Well..he threw out a blocking bet on the river. I think I like it. I wonder if he will call though. I think Ice is correct in throwing out a smaller raise for value.

I'm definitely not all-in there.

Although statistically it's not likely, I'm thinking he could have KK. This is exactly the way a typical muppet would play it. Refuse to see the A on the flop, refuse to fold the turn, and lead out a tiny bit when you catch your miracle card on the river.

He would have to be a CRAZY muppet to call the flop with QJ. But I suppose [Qs][Js] is possible.

What hands can call your push that you beat? AT and KT, maybe. Anything else?.

well, pushing here seems to not be the best move.

Still, the muppet called me with AQ.

looking at the hand afterwards, i felt i grossly overplayed it, and in most situations i shouldn't have been called by any hands that i could reasonably beat here.

oops.

That was such a blocking bet...which is why I was pretty comfortable with your raise.

Most players aren't advanced enough for a weak lead.

It was definately a blocking bet, but onyl a total moron would call all in. The only thinh he can beat is AJ. A smaller raise should get called alot more often, even though this one DID get called.

Yeah I agreed with you earlier about the size of the raise. I was just saying i'm happy that he did go ahead and put more money in :)
