Are you a Gambler?

Postby Sully » Sat Jul 23, 2005 1:43 pm

Ok after my post "Confessions of an Undisciplined Poker Player" a few people started questioning if I had a gambling problem. And from how the post reads, I can see where they might get that from. But I can assure you gambling has never been in my life and never will.

So for a little fun I grabbed the 20 questions of the GA website. They say "Most compulsive gamblers will answer yes to at least seven of these questions." How accurate are they? Ill post the questions and my answers. Feel free to do the same.

1. Did you ever lose time from work or school due to gambling? No

2. Has gambling ever made your home life unhappy? Yes

3. Did gambling affect your reputation? No

4. Have you ever felt remorse after gambling? Yes

5. Did you ever gamble to get money with which to pay debts or otherwise solve financial difficulties? No

6. Did gambling cause a decrease in your ambition or efficiency? No

7. After losing did you feel you must return as soon as possible and win back your losses? No, I would say its quite the opposite

8. After a win did you have a strong urge to return and win more? Yes

9. Did you often gamble until your last dollar was gone? Not live, but my PS account has hit $0 a few times

10. Did you ever borrow to finance your gambling? No

11. Have you ever sold anything to finance gambling? No

12. Were you reluctant to use "gambling money" for normal expenditures? No

13. Did gambling make you careless of the welfare of yourself or your family? No

14. Did you ever gamble longer than you had planned? No

15. Have you ever gambled to escape worry or trouble? No

16. Have you ever committed, or considered committing, an illegal act to finance gambling? No

17. Did gambling cause you to have difficulty in sleeping? Yes

18. Do arguments, disappointments or frustrations create within you an urge to gamble? No

19. Did you ever have an urge to celebrate any good fortune by a few hours of gambling? No

20. Have you ever considered self destruction or suicide as a result of your gambling? No

So Thats 5 for me. I would not consider myself a compulsive gambler... how about you guys?

5 DEFINITE yeses... I maybe (the one about the losses wanting to make me gamble again, like if I lose a HORRIBLE 1 outter to a total idiot..)...

Guess that makes me borderline, although I think a lot of their questions are pretty dumb (ie... has winning at gambling ever made you want to gamble more...??? Duh...)...

I havnt played longer than planned simply because I dont plan sessions. I just stop when I feel like stopping. If I had said to myself "I will only play for one hour", Im sure there would be times where I played longer than that.

I agree though, some of the qustions are dumb

I'm on 4. That surely makes me the least degenerate person here!

Or at least it would do if you ignore the collosal quantity of donkey porn under my bed. Goddamit.

I rank dead last. I do better at the tests in Cosmo. Much like Party Poker, they too are rigged.

I wonder where Stu Ungar would have fallen on the scale? This was a man who once lost 100K on the golf course...before they got to the first tee.

Now there's a gambler.

I had exactly the same answers as BigPhish: yes to #8 and #14 only. And I can say the same about every other online video game I've played: when I've won I want to play more, and I sometimes play longer than I intended. So really I think I get a 0 out of 20.

In fact, if you substitute "Starcraft" for "gambling," I have to answer yes to #1, #2, #3, #4, #6, #15, and #17. God I loved that game.

My problem isn't wanting to gamble more when i win...

My problem is trying to stay when I'm winning. I'm so satisfied with a small win that I have to force myself to keep playing.

I'm the opposite of a gambler. I'm a "tightwad." Albiet a more handsome one then a certain poster on this site whom shall remain nameless, but shares the same name as what I just called myself, namely "tightwad."

ouch.
