Did I get Punked here?

Postby 80Proof » Mon Jul 25, 2005 8:12 pm

First off, I love the forum....been reading for awhile now. This is my first hand post though....It really confused the crap out of me. I'm hoping someone can point out my horrible errors or make sense out of this.

What do you do here? I had only played about 1 round at this table, had decent stats on 2 players but NO read/stats on the players involved in this hand. Cant get the converter to work right so I will add my commentary....

Party Poker (8 handed)

Preflop: Confused is CO with [Qs], [Ad].
5 folds.

UTG limps, UTG+1 limps...folds to me. I make it $2 b/c I know the Button and SB are pretty tight so they will usually fold, not sure about BB though. They all fold, UTG calls and UTG+1calls. Pot is $6.75.

Flop: [Qh], [Kd], [7c] (3 players)
UTG checks, UTG+1 checks, I bet $4. I'm not happy about the K but is the bet enough...too much?? UTG folds. UTG+1 calls...boo.

Turn: [As] (2 players)
UTG+1 checks, Confused checks. Not sure why I checked....I guess I figured I made the best hand, maybe afraid of AK....I dont know. Pot is now $14.75.

River: [7h] (2 players)
UTG+1 calls 44.85 (All-In). Damn, now what? Seems like he doesnt want to get called but he could have AK, 7x, JT, a boat,....I have no read.....

Final Pot:

is roughly $53.60.....I've got about $45 at this point. What do you do?

Thanks for reading.

Your check on the turn made me cringe. You have to maintain the lead; your hand improved and you checked it?! You have to be in the lead on the turn. That river doesn't necesarily scare me but his all in tells me your beat. I say you fold and try to pick another spot; this I feel like was a great spot to get some money in unless your up against JT or A7 or 78s but I don't really see that. You gotta be aggressive on that turn; and the river result should be your lesson i guess..

Yes, my turn check was retarded, I know. I dont know what I was thinking....I'm trapping?, I'm beat?, I'm just dumb?...I dont know. But what abou the rest of the hand leading up to that? What about the preflop bet, the flop bet? What about the river, pretty sure I beat right?

the point of people doing that is that they hope it will be seen as a buy bluff and get called. If they bet $40 into $20 pot or $10, the $40 bet only has to work 1/4 the time to break even with the $10 value bet. If they think they can get someone to call more than that, they make extra money. I've only really done that once and I wasn't called so I don't know if anyone has stats on if they make more money doing this or not. However, overbetting a pot can be very useful when you have the nuts and you know someone has a hand he can't lay down.

Here's an example from Ice where an overbet on the river could be very useful.

The guy had trip 6's and was unlikely to fold so he could have made a very large bet and gottne more money.
