interesting article on stu ungar, johnny
i dont know a whole lot about him , i've seen his semi-fictional movie and read some stories. from what i gather his reads on people at the table were almost non-human. one story i read, , had stu ungar and another pro playing heads up. on the last hand at the river, the opponent bets all in for 32k and stu calls his bet down with a TEN high knowing full well his opponent had missed a small straight draw.
now if thats not a good poker player i dont know what is... the only requirement for a good poker player is to win lots of money at the table, in my opinion. what stu ungar did away from the table does not take away from the fact that he had perfect control at the table. since you could hardly call stu ungars poker game a "gamble" he satiated his desire to gamble with other activities- in which he had harldy any control over. everybody has their "leaks", stu ungar chose a path most of us could never take, and although we probably wouldn't follow in his footsteps, why should that take away from his status as a poker player?
