For me, I think it was actually the first time I ever played about a year and a half ago. I had watched my friends play and finally decided to join in one day. I did not win my first game but I did come in second. I don't know why I thought I could make money, because none of my friends that I played with seemed to win consistently
I went and bought a book on the game the very next day and picked up good starting hands. Within two months I was beating my friends game about %60 of the time and that was basically just with having good starting hands Then I got my brother Nate hooked and he became my only real competition. It reached the point that Nate and I were finishing first and second so much that they would not inform us about the game times. I always found out when they were playing though and crashed the game. For other reasons I quit playing with them.
The last one I played with them was on New Years Day. We were going to have one $50 buy in tourney with about 10 people, but because some people could not make the game at its original time we made it into two games with a $25 buy in. I won the first one, and my brother won the second one. Over the course of about six months I would say I took well over a grand off of all of my friends playing ten to twenty dollar tourneys twice a week with them.
Thanks to the group of fish that helped teach me the game I know now for a fact that poker is +EV even though at the beginning it was jsut an educated guess.
