I really liked the first season of Desparate Housewives, which is on ABC. It is clever and well written with intriguing ways of knotting the plot together. It is a soap opera in the sense that Six Feet Under is a soap, if you think Six Feet Under is too pretentious you might not enjoy this. I haven't taken a look at the writer and creators of the show but it has the feel of American Beauty in story telling style.

Deadwood... HBO series about a mining town in the late 1800's in the unsettled Americas. I've watched both seasons twice, and would give them another go to watch them with someone that hasn't seen it yet. The "bad guy" is really likable, and is fun to watch my friends take the same reaction of going from contempt to liking him as the story progresses.

Arrested Development is a quirky and entertaining comedy on FOX. Feels more like a British comedy than an US TV. It is dry and bizarre at the same time.

In the animated realm of US TV, I'm enjoying the new season of Family Guy a bunch. Venture Brothers has been very entertaining as well, it is about not so super heros and villians.
