PLEASE READ - hurricane tourney?

Postby Felonius_Monk » Sun Sep 04, 2005 8:45 am

I notice there's lots of interest on this board about the current situation in NO, and also plenty of interest in donating to the red cross. A fantastic idea I'd have thought.

Somebody (I forget who) mentioned perhaps getting together a fund for the purpose through the BTP site. A good idea also, though I can see exactly why tetsuo didn't think it was appropriate and definitely sympathise with that.

How about this idea then, to both have some fun AND help out?...

Why don't we organise (instead of or perhaps along with the usual BTP monthly tournament)... a fundraising tourney over at Stars? Although I've not run a tourney before I will be happy to try to set something up (the usual sunday timeframe is probably good, to allow europeans and yanks alike to play at a reasonable hour) if they'll let me. I have a suspicion if we let Stars know (I have a contact there who has been helpful in the past, though admittedly not with anything like this) the cause that they might be persuaded to match the amount put up in tourney entry fees with a donation of there own.

The rules would be that we each stump up the entrance fee, and then match that as a donation to the red cross. If it's too much fuss to donate such an amount individually, we could nominate a trustworthy and well-known individual to collect each person's donation and then make the full amount payable to the charity in one lump sum. As I suggested the idea I will defer from this responsibility, if people want to do the tourney they'll have to elect a willing representative for this. Should be very simple, just a case of sending a stars or party transfer to the person in question, they collect the funds and validate that everyone has made their contribution, and then phones in a credit card (or whatever) donation to the RC.

So, who's in favour of this? And is it an easy job to organise a tourney on Stars? I would be happy to organise it if so.

I suggest a NL MTT, usual rules, and what buyin would people be happy with? So as not to exclude anyone I would suggest the usual $10 (or maybe $20), as everyone will obviously have to pay double the amount (the sum to enter plus a matching donation). If anyone wishes to put more into the charity kitty that's obviously at their discretion.

If we are OK with this plan and it goes ahead I will (in the unlikely event I don't get busted out re-raising preflop with the awesome J9s) donate any winnings to the cause as well.

Perhaps a week today (Sunday) would be a good time, at the usual 5pm ET (I think that's right?) that we play the BTP tourney.

I just thought that this way, instead of the ideas that people have had of using the site or asking for contributions to their own personal fund raising efforts, we could have a couple of hours of fun poker, crude jokes regarding TW and Mecos' sexuality, and make a significant group contribution which isn't going to bankrupt anyone.

Thoughts?

Monk,

A most excellent idea!!! This is exactly the kind of thing i was hoping and looking for in my original post.

I am definitely in.

I am happy to volunteer to be "treasurer" and collect the donations if people trust me to do so.

Heres a PM that I got from PM (pun intended....its from Piers)
***********************************************************************************

Hope all is well. I have been thinking about the messages regarding the donations to the Red Cross for the hurricane help. I thought that since BTP has nearly been in existance for 1 year that perhaps we could have our own WCOOP over a 7 or 8 day period and donate half of the prize pool to the Red Cross effort. We could use the same point scheme as for the normal BTP tourneys to crown the 1rst Annual BTP Champion over the period as well as do something for this relief effort. Just a thought.

Something perhaps like the following setup:

Day 1: 10.00 Limit Holdem
Day 2: 10.00 PL Omaha
Day 3: 10.00 Stud
Day 4: 10 NL Holdem
Day5: 10 Omaha H/L
Day 6: 10 PL Holdem
Day 7: 10 7 Stud H/L
Day 8: 20.00 NL Championship

This sounds cool , although I dont know if we can get enough people who are willing to play all events and can fit something like this into their schedule. I know I cant do it every day. Even every one every Sun would probably not be possible for me, but if anyone wants to take this idea and run with it, it might be worthwhile.

Not much response so far - come on guys, post in this thread if you can play OR if you want to play but can't make it on sunday - we can always schedule it for any time, whatever suits most people.

This is just a couple of hours of your time playing online poker (which, lets face it, you'd probably be doing anyway!) to raise money for a good cause and have some fun with the BTP glitterati. Let's make an effort and see if we can get a good turn out, surely with nearly 800 people signed up to BTP we can manage to get 30 or so to play!

I think Piers Idea sounds like a lot of fun, though it may be hard to make work and get enough people to play each event to make it worth everyones time and effort. If we can get enough people it would be a hell of a lot of fun, though I really suck at 7 stud HL. I would be willing to play all 4 weekends or just one tourney as monk suggested. Also we should have Tetsuo send out one of those mass BTP E-mails so everyone will know what going on.

I won't be playing, but I think you should just do one tourney for each game, which would be like 5, right? 6 if you can't limit hold'em I guess. But limit is such a gay game...

It would be fun, but I think that it should be spread out more, or set up a HORSE tournament instead.

In. I'd love to finally get a chance to own you guys in a tourney setting....

...and to donate to a very worthy cause!

I think I just slid up (down) the degenerate scale.
