I am becoming more and more a fan of the University of Wisconsin basketball and football teams. When I was growing up, both were so awful, all the time, that it seems like a miracle to see them winning regularly.
I think the basketball team, especially, is misunderstood nationally. This is no longer the same team that won 50-46, 46-42 type games. They still play defense tenaciously, but now they have a terrific offense, too. Bo Ryan is as good a coach as you're going to find in the country. Every player on the Badgers learns all the post moves: they can all post up and score. They can all pass, and they space the floor well almost all the time. Every player learns to play tough defense, all the time. Every player has to be in great physical condition. They play hard, they play tough, and they win a lot of games.
The game against North Carolina in the NCAA's was a classic. We were a possession or two away from winning that one. (We had no answer for Sean May: we need a big body in the middle.) Everybody said afterwards that UNC giving up so many points showed their defense was no good. But no, their defense was solid: UW just has an offense with enough firepower to go toe to toe with the big boys. The national media hasn't figured that out yet, but it's true.
I am SO looking forward to this upcoming college basketball season. GO BADGERS!!!
