An interesting PLO $200 play...

Postby Felonius_Monk » Sat Jan 15, 2005 7:22 am

Quick hand for you here; in this case, I decided to "mix things up a bit" on the flop. On a lower buy-in table, I nearly always make fairly straightforward bets with my hands, I only bet less than the pot if i'm milking an opponent or trying to build a pot with a monster, OR if I'm betting to feel out my opponents or get a cheap fold. Here I did it on the flop (VERY unusual for me) purely as a means of providing disinformation.

Usually, a weak lead bet into a drawing-type flop is a cast iron tell that the opponent is an inexperienced player with a draw that he wants to play out fairly cheaply. It's almost always a pretty horrible play, and shouldn't ever really be used without a collosal draw (and even then you should usually bet the pot). In this case, I'd flopped the nut straight but I knew anyone with a nut draw would call a full bet and put me in trouble if any of the many drawing cards hit. So, I lead for a small bet; this folds any bad draws BUT also I was looking for a player (preferably a short stack) to seize on this as a sign of weakness and raise me back, thus getting it heads up. If a drawing card comes I can still fold cheaply, but if I can get heads up and see a safe turn after re-raising, I can make a huge bet and get a lot of chips in on this hand without risking too much on the flop. I wouldn't recommend this at a lower buyin table, but it seemed to work nicely here, as the player with 2-pair fired back at me with a semi-bluff and I won a nice pot.

Say I were heyhey and I played this hand. I am new so I am trying to figure out what the right play is here. First of all, I don't think I would call that preflop but since he did we will see the flop.

With someone betting in front of me a small amount and a nice looking straight flop you damn right I would put you on a straight or a set. That being said, since this guy did have top two and no other legitimate draws, would it be right to call even though I put you on a straight 80% of the time and a set 20%. Or should I be folding this to a bet like that?

Thanks for the input and help

well, he is severely limited in his play because of his short stack so that is why you don't play with one. Assuming I call preflop, which i wouldn't in this hand, I would fold the flop because i have no draws except a 4 out "boat draw" against a coordinated board. With this hand, i'm looking for a 57x flop and not much else which is why you shouldn't play this crappy hand.

Yes, he should fold preflop, and to my bet. I imagine it's likely he would've folded to a full bet but raised me because he put me on a flush draw of some variety, thus assuming he's a little way ahead.

My weak lead here would be fairly symptomatic of a high flush draw, or a set, in most cases, with the flush draw the favourite. It would be a play made only by poor players.

My straight here is not very strong at all, especially given my bad position. I need to either get all in against a drawing hand or play very cautiously. If I bet and then someone else raised me, I would fold the nuts here.
