you need a video card that supports dual monitors or you need a second video card.

one easy way to tell if you have dual monitor support is to look at the back and see if you have two video out options. one is usually DVI. you may want to take a digital picture and post it (the bigger the better... plenty of light).

i think you can probably buy a decent video card and get it installed (if your computer has available slots) at someplace like CompUSA for between $100 and $200. They are usually really easy to install, but I wouldn't do it if you don't have confidence (and an anti-static grounding bracelet).

what kind of desktop do you have? towers and mini-towers are easy to add this stuff to. again, pics would help.

As you probably know the blue cord is my current monitor. The slot to the right of it appears to be identical, so thats a good sign I believe. The little drawing under the slot for the monitor looks like this

o

Except the circle is more like a rounded square. The slot next to it's picture looks like this

| o | o |

And the circles really are circles there.

Hope this helps the diagnostic.

i'm going to guess that your card supports dual monitors. the image is a bit too blurry for me to tell for sure. i am pretty sure that the symbol is supposed to represent the second monitor. a manual might help confirm this. or maybe another BTPer can confirm?

also, who made your computer?

go ahead and get that 2001FP for 4 and change. :D

Kuso, most computers that have both analog and digital video ports support one or the other, not both at the same time.

Xaston, you need to get a vid card that has multiple monitor support, i.e. two output jacks. There are several on the market that do it.

really? i've done a vga and dvi dual monitor set up.

my assumption is that he _does_ have a vid card with dual monitor support... could be wrong.

if xas would give us some details on his setup, that would help. if you go to control panels - display - settings, you can get some info about whether you have dual monitor capability. in particular, if you go to the advanced page, there might be a "display" tab that gives you multiple display option. at least i can do this on my computer.

I'm not sure what the question is asking or how to find the answer, but assuming you mean what kind of video card do I have, here is my guess:

Intel(R) 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller

Is that a video card?

you should have gotten a dvi plug with your 2001fp... see if that fits into the second port.

if it does, plug in your old monitor into the first port and try to configure.

also, if you could do "alt+printscreen" for these pages (after you press the buttons, paste into a graphics editing program):

control panels - display - settings

control panels - display - settings - advanced

This might help.

troubleshooting without being present is not easy.

So I have no idea what the hell you guys are saying but I remembered the 2001FP came with another cord and I thought maybe this was the "DVI" thing you guys were talking about. Both ends of the cord, however, look like this.

______

| | |
. . .
. . .
. . .

. . .
. . .
. . .
_____

Whereas the spare port in the back of the computer looks like this

___________
\ . . . . . /
\ . . . . /
\________ /

Here are are the screen shots.

Thanks for the patience so far guys.

Oh boy. My hand made drawings got fucked up and the screen shots somehow came out microscopic.

::sigh::
