A Chip and a Chair (ok, so it was 270, so almost)

Postby kdiddy33 » Wed Oct 19, 2005 6:31 am

I have been playing more Omaha of late than NL SNGs, so after a little slide in Omaha 8 I figured I'd fire up an $11 NL SNG just for the heck of it.

Anyways, after foolishly chasing a flush draw four handed, I'm down to 570 in chips. We go to the break and I'm down to 270. Ugh, I have to wait 4 minutes before I get blinded out, excruciating. Ahhhhh, but the Full Tilt poker gods sensed my sadness after a losing day and decided to annoint me with some of their holy water.

First hand off the break I'm on the button with J 10 os, I push em, small folds BB calls with....10 9!!! I double up.

Next hand (UTG), I catch me some 9s and push all in and the other guys fold it up. Now at around 1500.

Next hand I play I'm in the SB (folded my BB previously), with KINGS!!!! woo hoo. dude ahead of me raises it up to $1050 (pot size bet), I smile widely and push all in, BB folds, dude calls with his jacks!!! I'm now at $3200 or so.

A couple hands later, I'm on the button with A 10 os, and I (insert cheap heat here) BET THE POT!!!! BB thinks about it forever (this guy was kind of a jerk during the game, so this was particularly fun) and raises all in with 4000 in chips. I think about it and figure I'm beat, but what the heck its been a ridiculous run, so I call. He has 4s and.....

I hit a 10 on the river!!!! He goes APE CRAP of course, as he now has 763 in chips left and I'm now in control with 7500 or so in chips. A few hands later, I'm in the BB and mister 763 shoves em in. SB folds. I have 8 3 os, a pretty powerful hand. I say to him, dude I'm just calling this to be a jerk, good luck. He flips over A 10 sooooooted.

Board comes up K 9 8 3 8 - giving me the hideous full boat.

I laugh HYSTERICALLY and the other guys chuckle as well. This sent the dude into the traditional - learn how to play verbage and he laid it on thick. I told him its gambling and to find his way to the door.

Moving on, I have A Q os UTG, so I BET THE POT, BB calls. Flop is garbage. BB checks to me, I sense weakness and have him outchipped. I push em in, he folds, leaving him with 1500. Now I have like 8500 in chips or so. I eventually knock out the small stack, leaving me heads up with 11000 in chips and I get AK os in the BB. The small stack pushes all in and I call. He shows AQ and I take it down for the win.

One of my greatest comebacks ever!!! Fun as hell and made me smile as I headed off to bed. Like Jimmy V said, don't ever give up!!!
Good, you?

Ahh, yes. It's not entirely uncommon to mount a comeback like that, but it's still fun and unexpected when it happens. I pulled off a similar feat the night before last, coming back from around 3xBB with still about six people left to finish second. And last night, a guy took me down heads up after being down to something like 1.5xBB with about five people left.

Do you regularly bet the pot preflop? I've been playing S&G's on FTP lately and I mostly see people betting clear multiples of the BB preflop.

Just curious.

And yeah, gotta love those combacks. Nicely done.

Fishy, you been playing on Full Tilt at all? I saw you posted on their forum. Haven't seen you on there.

I've become an Omaha junkie and its an addiction that is kicking me in the balls of late. Cash games in these are addicting but can be punishing. Wears down my patience. Perhaps its an adjustment for me since I typically played SNGs more often than cash.

Big Phish, I play tight and bet preflop when I actually have a hand worth raising with. In last night's game, I got a good run of cards late, so that helped. PS, like your avatar.

Yesterday, in a 15+1 Turbo on PS, I managed to muddle around until I blundered into the money, then went on a run. Three times I took the pot, each time saying, "two live cards." For those who aren't familiar with this terms, it means a total crap hand, but one that's not likely to be counterfeited like KJ or Q9. 84 would be two live cards. If you get lucky, one of those cards will pair the board while the opponents AJ will go awry.

It surprised me, reading HOH, at how often pros will use these hands for just this purpose when the table is short. The difference between AK and any two cards is surprisingly little. The odds of any card pairing is exactly the same, regardless of the rank of the card. A 6 is the same statistically as an A or a K when you deal 5 more cards. Many people just don't realize it. They cannot believe that 73s beat their TTs, when the odds of those two cards falling or the straight filling or getting a flush are less than the odds of another T falling. Now, I'd rather have AA, but in a heads up situation, 86s might be a pretty darn good hand. Yet most of your opponents seems to feel that their Broadway cards a entitled to win.

If you want to see this in action, buy into the 3+1 rebuy on Pokerstars at 8 some night. The number of junk hands that actually win will blow your mind. :)

nh, kdiddy. :)

ps--last night I had K9 go KK99x. hehe
