I don't like how I played this...almost folded the river too

Postby EscapePlan9 » Tue Oct 25, 2005 6:44 pm

Should I have bet this flop? It wasn't until the turn that I realized I had a gutshot along with my pair.

Fold on turn? There's two flush draws out there so my gutshot outs could be tainted, and hitting my jack would put 4-to-straight out there. I'm only getting 6:1.

I called the river bet for numerous reasons. I didn't have to overcall since the other player folded, the bettor was a short-stack, I was getting 8:1, and there's at least a 15% chance the bettor was making desperation bets to the river with straight draws or flush draws. I often see short-stacks betting and raising with straight/flush draws to put themselves all-in since they cannot afford to fold the hand and have the most fold equity that way.

I'm pretty sure I should have folded right on the flop. My J, T, and 9 outs all have to be heavily discounted. Hitting a J could give someone a flush or a straight. Hitting a T could give someone a flush. Hitting a 9 could give someone a flush, or split a straight with me (or lose to KJ).

In other words, I should have folded the flop due to the reverse implied odds. I got lucky and won it still.
