Vegas 10-25-28 - partial trip report

Well, first off, the MGM Grand charges $10.99 per 24 hours for internet access. The freakin Super8 in Poughkeepsie gives it away for free, but MGM doesn't.

*Please don't ask why I know about the Super8 in Poughkeepsie, I'd rather not go into it.

I arrived at 11am Vegas time on Tuesday. Room wasn't ready and I just hung out till it was, whereupon I immediately took a nap. Long flight topped off by a Brooklyn family with 3 screaming kids will do that to you. The father was like Andrew Dice Clay, on crack. When one kid wouldn't stop screaming he actually told his wife, "Jesus, would you shut him the fuck up already? Give him some Tylenol, Valium, whatever the hell you do!!!" She replied, "I tried Tylenol and I didn't bring the damn Valium." Nice.

Woke up at 3 and went to the Poker Room. Jumped right in the $1/2 NL game. Bought in for $100 when I saw 3 of the 8 guys there had stacks of at least a grand. 2 hands in I realized why - every flop cost a minimum of $15 to see. A raise to $15 wouldn't get any of them to fold their 85o either. Suckout central, lemme tell ya. I folded for about 30 hands, got QQ and figured $15 was a good number, but everyone folded.

5 or 6 hands later I got AQ on the button. Raised to $15 and got one caller, one of the medium stack guys. Flop came 842 or something raggy and I put in a continuation bet of $15 that he flat called. I figure I'm done with the hand until a Q hit the turn. It also put 2 hearts on board. I went $15 again and he pushed in. Damn. Unfortunately for me, I was reading Harrington on Holdem v II on the plane and he mentioned the 'all in on a flush draw' move as being pretty popular lately. Ha, that's what he's doing, I'll call him.

Uhh....no, he was doing the "all in on slowplayed pocket aces" move instead. Reload.

Got nothing for another 15 minutes and left to meet other bankers for dinner (this is, after all, a business trip).

After dinner went back to the poker room at got a seat at a lively $3-6 table. Drunk kid was blowing his stack away and was kind enough to give me some of it. Nothing special, made $10 maybe when the table broke up. I moved to a $2-4 and got card dead for at least an hour and a half. Just horrible cards, the few Ak/AQ hands always hit a rag board, that kinda thing.

Made it all up on this gem - I get 99 in MP. Raise it. Guy reraises, other guy calls, other guy calls, I call. First caller was a rock, I figure I need a set to continue.

Praise Allah, the flop came 972 with 2 diamonds. Bet, raise, fold, I reraise, call, rereraise. Nice, I'm thinking someone has a set of 7s, or maybe 72o (guys had been talking about the hand all night and it was considered 'pussy' to not play it if you got it. Both guys call.

I figure the rock has a big pair, not sure on the other guy, he was a little loose from what I saw. Turn is a J and it's the same deal - bet, raise, I reraise, bettor rereraises. Still no flush either.

River is about as good as it gets - a 7 that completes the flush. I initially fear quads, but if I'm gonna lose to quads then it's gonna be a lot. First guy bets, 2nd (rock) folds!!! How the hell can you fold there, unless you're on a flush draw? I raise, bettor just calls and proudly shows 88o.

Yup, 88 all the way down with no draw and 2 overcards. I love $2-4 sometimes. Pot was something near $80 or so, and put me slightly up for the night.

In the a.m. I went down and signed up for the 11am tourney. $65 buy in, no rebuys, 20 minute blinds. 60 player max, with alternates during the first hour. Ended up with 80 players all together, first place was something like $1700.

I basically stayed card dead early on, but stole a pot or 2. Doubled up off AQ vs KQ on a Q high flop so AQ almost redeemed itself for me. Not much went on tho, I survived an all in when we were down to 30 with AK vs JJ thanks to a K on the river. Later, when it was 2 tables and the blinds were 800/1600, I had 3300 left before posting the BB when I got AKs again. Guy went all in, one caller, I called and wasn't in horrible shape vs the first guy (A8), but the 2nd guy had JJ (he was the same guy I sucked out on just 30 mins earlier). This time his Jacks held up and I was out in 17th or so.

So far, that's it. I'll be playing some more $3-6 later, might hit the tourney again Friday morning if the schedule lets me.

Yeah, the waitresses are very friendly, but that's probably to overcome the average looks.

I'm blowing off the rest of the classes today and gonna play some cards. This business stuff is really boring.

If you're into 1/2NL, try Ballys... BY FAR the worst poker crowd in Vegas... And that's sure as shit sayin a lot... If you want higher limit, the Mirage has like 1000 games going on at once, and a lot of em are bad, even up to the $15/30 game...

Tried the Excalibur this morning. What a dumpy room that is. Didn't feel like waiting so I took a seat at a 2-4 table. Played for an hour, didn't win a single hand. Had top pair top kicker sucked out on the river to 2 pair 3 times. Had a set sucked out by runner runner flush. Ended down $80, which I guess could have been worse.

I did end up dragging a $185 pot on the 3-6 at MGM yesterday, so that ended up as my only winning session so far. I have not won a hand with AK or AQ since I got here, the only one's I've hit have been middle pairs that setted or boated on me. Not a single straight or flush either. Ugh.
