How could I/should I have played this better?

Postby Juskimo » Fri Dec 02, 2005 5:22 pm

Or is this guy just a CS and I should welcome him to my table?

2nd hand of the tourney, so no reads.

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em Tourney, Big Blind is t20 (9 handed)

CO (t1500)
Button (t1490)
SB (t1480)
BB (t1400)
UTG (t1500)
UTG+1 (t1500)
Hero (t1500)
MP2 (t1500)
MP3 (t1630)

Preflop: Hero is MP1 with [Qc], [Qd].
UTG calls t20, UTG+1 calls t20, Hero raises to t200, 5 folds, BB calls t180, UTG folds, UTG+1 folds.

Flop: (t450) [6c], [5s], [Th] (2 players)
BB checks, Hero bets t200, BB calls t200.

Turn: (t850) [6h] (2 players)
BB checks, Hero bets t500, BB calls t500.

River: (t1850) [8h] (2 players)
BB bets t500 (All-In), Hero calls t500.

Final Pot: t2850

Results in white below:
BB has Ah Qh (flush, ace high).
Hero has Qc Qd (two pair, queens and sixes).
Outcome: BB wins t2850.

Advice? Lay it down on the river? I knew he didnt have the 6, so I figured he was overplaying a10.

You raised quite a bit too much with QQ pre-flop. Instead of raising like 10x the BB, scaring everyone away, and taking down the 3.5BB pot, raise something closer to 5-7BBs. That way only one or maybe two will stick around and you can have a nice pot for your monster.

I would have just pushed the turn. You only have a couple hundred more than the pot. If he calls with his flush draw+overcards, so be it. You'll still win 75% of the time.

I don't mind how you played it. You bet big enough on the flop that his call was incorrect, but small enough that he didn't lay it down (I probably bet more though, 250-300). On the turn, when the flush draw came out, you bet larger relative to the pot, and made him pay to draw; again he makes the incorrect call. On the river, you have to call given the pot odds and your holdings. He either has AT, Ax of hearts, or 88-JJ. You definitely win enough to justify the call.

EscapePlan's advice isn't bad either. The pot is big enough on the turn that you can happily take it down right there. I woudn't play it that way, but if your flop bet was bigger (say 300) and he still calls, then the pot is 1050 on the turn. BB then has 900 left, and a push is best here.

The basic rule of thumb to apply here is to nearly always bet atleast 1/2 pot on the flop. It is a nice convenient bet size that seems worth a call to a lot of hands, but will make most hands (especially with no flush draw out) pay too much to draw. As blinds get larger you can bet less relative to the pot.

textbook play if your playing against a good poker player, that guy was crazy. I`ve found that lot of people simply call with anything. When i get dealt a big pair i typically raise PF by 120-150. if there are no overcards i will push all in on the flop to prevent people calling and catching cards. This may not be "correct" but i find it prevents many of these situations of having a player calling with poor odds.
