That book by Doyle is called "Poker Wisdom of a Champion".

If you're going to buy it - do it through BTP! :D

I will keep your guy's advice in mind. Right now I feel I can play my A game 20-25 hours a week so that's probably what i'll do.

Hopefully my rate will jump significantly at the 1/2 tables because I need the money.

Ouch. Good vacation in North Carolina? Doubt it... Tell me if you think of one, though!

OK, I'm not sure I want to be the one to follow those posts. "Happy ending"?? Yeesh.

But moving on ....

I was reminded in the "American fiction" thread of people's different reactions to Mark Twain. If people read Huck Finn in school, they do not enjoy it nearly as much as they do when they read it on their own. I remember trying to talk with a couple of students during office hours about how great that book is (I was a professor once...long ago; Adam's not the only Ph.D. around here), when they were studying the book (not my class; not my subject area) and they just could not see my point of view.

Same thing applies to a lot of things, including poker. If you have to do it, then it's work, and it's no fun. If you don't have to do it, it's play, and you'll enjoy it more. No matter what it is.

I don't know how possible it is to make poker a pastime rather than a job for you, kenny, but my guess is that you may need to give it a shot. Otherwise you may well be burned out on it completely pretty quick....

I really enjoy playing poker. And I enjoy thinking about the money I can make and will make. But when I think, "Hey, a few hundred bucks a month I could earn maybe -- that's a car payment!" -- it's amazing how unpleasant the whole activity suddenly sounds.

A suggestion for you might be the situation i'm currently in. I have a very easy part time job in a relaxed atmosphere working in a small business. I work 1pm - 5pm 5 days a week and my boss is just like a friend. Downside? A job like this definitely doesn't cover the bills but it does make it more manageable. I was in a really bad job in the past when I got fed up and quit. Luckily I had been saving so I went to this job to give me time to find a real job. As I'm trying to decide what to do, I realize that I have no clue what I want to do. However, the extra time has given me time to develop my poker game hopefully to a point where it actually puts me in the black when I combine it with my part time job. This takes the stress off me if I don't play too much.

I got really lucky with the part time job I got but with the money you can make playing, having a steady income from another job can really help.

I definitely go along with what Brian says, my long(ish) term aim is to do something similar.

Having some sort of income besides poker (whether it's a part time job, affiliate stuff, propping, a business you run from home etc etc) would be helpful, but I recognise it's not always as easy as that...
