(15+1 Turbo) QQ Early in the Tourney - with position

Postby mikos » Thu Dec 29, 2005 3:29 pm

Curious to see opinions on how I played the below. Thanks. (No read on the player BTW)

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em Tourney, Big Blind is t20 (9 handed)

MP1 (t1480)
MP2 (t1420)
MP3 (t1550)
CO (t1400)
Hero (t1260)
SB (t1480)
BB (t1640)
UTG (t1740)
UTG+1 (t1530)

Preflop: Hero is Button with [Qc], [Qh].
UTG calls t20, UTG+1 calls t20, 4 folds, Hero raises to t140, 2 folds, UTG calls t120, UTG+1 calls t120.

Flop: (t450) [7s], [Js], [2d] (3 players)
UTG checks, UTG+1 bets t60, Hero raises to t520, UTG folds, UTG+1 calls t460.

- My thought here was make them pay for the flush draw (if on it) and don't let them get a cheap look at the turn (in case they had A or K).

Turn: (t1490) [7h] (2 players)
UTG+1 bets t100, Hero calls t100.

- Backed off here since he called two large raises. Was thinking maybe KK or AA but the $60 flop bet didn't make sense. AK, AQ more likely. Probably not aggressive enough since I let him draw cheaply (if hunting for the flush or A/K).

River: (t1690) [Ad] (2 players)
UTG+1 bets t100, Hero calls t100.

- Ace completely scared me off but for 100 had to call. Shocked he didn't bet more considered he made top 2 pair. Guess I got off cheap.

Final Pot: t1890

Results in white below:
UTG+1 has As Jd (two pair, aces and jacks).
Hero has Qc Qh (two pair, queens and sevens).
Outcome: UTG+1 wins t1890.

Thanks all.

I'd bet less preflop, bet less on the flop (but still a significant amount), and push the turn if he's still in it.

maybe raise to 80 pre, bet pot on flop and push turn.

I'd raise less pre-flop. With QQ, I'd raise between 80-100. With JJ, I'd gladly raise to 100-120, or early on with the 10/20 blinds I may even limp with it.

The flop raise was good. His bet on the turn seems awfully fishy. He's trying to scare you away with the 7 pairing up. I don't think he has a set, and any two-pair of his outside of KK/AA has been counterfeited. I'd raise the turn again - and that'd be an all-in raise. He probably is overplaying some top-pair hand, or was chasing a weak flush draw, perhaps T9s. He's drawing very thin. If he calls the turn and sucks out on the river with AJ, straight, or flush, that's poker for ya. You would have doubled up there over 70% of the time.

To be quite sincere, I would have played the hand much as you did. I have no problem with the PF raise nor the flop bet. I wouldn't have wanted to give him the odds to draw, but he didn't know what those were anyway. He wasn't going anywhere and I'm actually surprised he didn't reraise all in. You cannot knock these monkeys off a hand when they've got TPTK on the flop. If he hadn't sucked a three-outer out of the river, then he'd have made the typical donkey play we all know and love so well.

If it weren't for luck, the suckers wouldn't play. We actually should applaud them for it, because it makes them come back over and over, regardless of how many times they go broke. And, not knowing when you're beat is going to make you a very broke child.

Next game.

i don't see how this guy could have a 7 after calling a raise preflop and that big raise on the flop. he would have to be a super fish/calling station. Therefore, that 7 really helped you, not him, and you need to protect your hands. no cheap cards. push.
