Crying call at best?

Postby shamdonk » Tue Jan 24, 2006 12:29 am

Party Poker 1/2 Hold'em (9 max, 8 handed)

Preflop: Hero is SB with [Tc], [Js].
1 fold, UTG+1 calls, 3 folds, Button calls, Hero completes, BB checks.

Flop: (4 SB) [9h], [Jc], [3c] (4 players)
Hero bets, BB folds, UTG+1 calls, Button calls.

Turn: (3.50 BB) [Ts] (3 players)
Hero bets, UTG+1 calls, Button calls.

River: (6.50 BB) [Kd] (3 players)
Hero checks, UTG+1 bets, Button folds, Hero calls.

Final Pot: 8.50 BB

Anyone call this?

I think you're probably better off leading the river and folding to a raise.

Yeah, certainly call... I mean, you're behind any K except AK and those below K9 (which he probably wouldn't limp UTG+1 with), and QJ, but there's the possibility that the has a flush draw and is only betting since you checked, so whatever. If he sucked out, foo on him.

Conversely-

Is bet-fold really a better line? That's only valuable if you think there are a good number of hands that he will call you with that he wouldn't bet if you checked, and you collect bets on those hands. In order to bet-fold, you have to be confident that whenever he puts in money that half the time he calls with a worse hand and the other half he raises with a better hand than yours (and you fold), and that's just to break even on the bet.

It's likely that bet-fold is a good line, but I'm not convinced.

They are not getting tricky per say, but they feel, somewhat violated that you could bet and bet then check on the river. I see even really really hardcore passive fish bet this river a lot of times at 3/6.
