Raising LP with only one limper

Postby CFlannagan » Sun Feb 05, 2006 2:17 am

Prima Poker skin
Limit Holdem Ring game
Limit: $0.50/$1
8 players

Pre-flop: (8 players) Hero is CO with [Qd] [Td]
3 folds, MP2 calls, Hero raises, 2 folds, BB calls, MP2 calls.

Flop: [6d] [Ks] [4d] (6.5SB, 3 players)
BB checks, MP2 checks, Hero bets, 2 folds.
Uncalled bets: 1SB returned to Hero.

Results:
Final pot: 3.25BB
Hero mucks Qd 10d

This strategy seems to work fairly well for me - raising in LP if there is only one limper so far and you think you'd be able to steal the blinds if there were no limpers. In the example, I didn't expect the BB to call, but it still worked out anyway.

I often would do this with ANY two cards - raising to shut out the blinds, and bet when it's checked around to me on the flop. The lone limper would fold most of the times - as it should because he wasn't interested enough w/his hand to raise it in the first place.

If he donkbets on the flop, then I would have to figure he probably hit something. I'd call and if he leads out on the turn, I'd fold. This would cost me 3 small bets total.

But this strategy if it works, yields me a profit of 4 small bets, and works most of the time w/right table conditions (ie: blinds are prone to folding to a raise, and only one limper).

Thoughts?

Yeah, its a pretty solid move most of the time. A lot of the time people will just look at your VPIP of 15 and muck without thinking about your position. But you really need the right table conditions and be careful not to overdo it. Even semi-aware players are going to start calling those raises if you make them with any two. And a smart player in the BB will start 3-betting to resteal with average cards pretty quick, which puts you in a tough spot, especially if you hit something like a medium pair.

PS: A lot depends on how you profile the limper.

14 VPIP? You could play a few more hands.
