At what limits can I apply advice from SS 2?

Postby Jux » Sun Mar 05, 2006 5:25 am

Currently I am playing at live 3/6 games to build up my bankroll. The players are incredibly weak calling with hands such as middle pair, bottom pair, even high card when they miss their draw. Even though the games are extremely soft, it seems like the aggressive strategies given by Jennifer Harman in SS 2 only backfire because most the players will call you down. I've tried isolating players to no avail as players will cold call a 3 bet without hesitation. It's gotten to the point where I think I'm playing weak tight, I don't even make continuation bets after I raise pre-flop anymore because I know players will call a bet on the flop with just about any 2 cards to see a turn.

Now I'm definately not complaining, because I do make good money when I make a hand, I was just wondering around what limit that type of aggressive play becomes more effective.

I've never read SS2. I can tell you that I've played all the limits from 0.50/1 up to 15/30, and with the exception of tightening up pre-flop slightly as I moved up, I can tell you that I've played the same way from the bottom all the way up.

Having not read SS2, but knowing how Jennifer plays, I think that my style is probably most similar to hers among the pros who put their ideas out there, with the exception that I won't loosen up as much as she does pre-flop to be placed into position with as many draws.

Her philosophy is much like the LHE counterpart to the style of Prahlad Friedman--see flops cheaply, and push with any sort of draw, made hand, or monster. As for the limits to apply this to--

Apply SOME OF the advice to the tighter limit games available places like Stars or Full Tilt, particularly 3/6 and above. Think of it this way--if you believe a player will lay down a hand, don't hesitate to bet it. At lower limits, many calling stations are lurking and will call you down with a whole bunch of nothing--a whole bunch of nothing that may be better than your busted draw.

Don't bluff or semi-bluff a calling station--at ANY limit.

1) Put as much money as you can pre-flop with your strong hands.

2) Most flops miss most hands. If you raise pre-flop, the board isn't horribly scary, and it's checked around to you as the pre-flop raiser, it is your DUTY to fire.

3) You want them calling your continuation bets with any 2 cards...All it does is provide a larger pot for you to win.

I play a balls-out aggressive style, to the point where I don't think many FR players on this site have aggression factors/frequencies that compare to mine. All I can say is, "works for me..."

I think someone on here once said online .5/1 is like 10/20 in real life. So 3/6 at the casino you do have to play differently because people are going to call you a lot. Play more and bet more with drawing hands, especially when you have good position. A single 30BB pot will make your night in live 3/6. That said, AA and KK and such still play pretty well in multiway pots, but hands like KJo that might have value when you open in late position are not as good.
