Another Bubble situation

Postby LuparFiend » Fri Oct 21, 2005 7:22 am

This happened to me earlier today in a $10 SNG at Stars.

4 people left. We all have between 2500-4000 chips, but I am the short stack with 2500. I think my image to the rest of the table is aggressive. I've been stealing the most blinds, probably about a third of them. Two other guys haven't been stealing too many blinds, and only raises pots with top 20% hands. Other dude has been going after the rest of the pots.

Blinds are 100/200

I'm in the SB with 99. UTG, who is one of the tighter folks, and has gotten really lucky to stay alive limps in. Button folds.

What do you do here? 500 in pot, I have 2400 after posting blind, and everyone has me covered. If I bet 4 times to BB and get called, there will be 1700 in the pot, and I'll have 1600 left. I suppose I can get away from the flop if lots of high cards come. If I get re-raised, I still might have a hard time getting away from pocket nines. Pocket nines 4-handed is a great hand.

Well, I pushed, hoping to just take the blinds. I figured the limp meant a small pocket pair, or maybe suited connectors like TJ.

BB Folds, and UTG Calls. He flips over KK. I didn't hit a nine, so I go home in 4th. The dude said he figured someone would be going all in. Nice play on his part I guess.

Ya, the more I think about it, the more I come to the conclusion that I'm screwed, and IGoHomeNow. Even if he would have raised 3X BB, I woulda still pushed and lost.

On to the next one.

Before I read the result, my first question was "Have you seen UTG limp with weak hands and fold to raises before?". Right when you mentioned he's a tighty, I started thinking he probably had something decent but was playing it passively. Without that read, I also would have pushed.

With that read... I wonder how he would have responded if you raised 4x BB. If he then pushed, I'd have to think he has AK or QQ-AA. If he called, you'd pretty much be screwed except for on the scariest flops where you could get away (or if you hit a 9).
